Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has openly criticized Team India's recent performances under the guidance of head coach Gautam Gambhir and voiced concerns about the team's leadership ahead of their upcoming tour to Australia.
Following India's 0-3 Test series whitewash to New Zealand at home, Gavaskar shared his disappointment and thoughts on India's coaching and captaincy situations during interviews with India Today and Sports Tak.

Reflecting on India's recent defeats, Gavaskar expressed his concern over Gambhir's coaching record. In an interview with India Today, he remarked on the team's first-ever 0-3 loss in a home Test series, saying, "The results speak for themselves. Even in Sri Lanka, India lost an ODI series after a long time. And now here, it's a loss, it's a terrible loss. So, I think the results speak for themselves."
India's struggles under Gambhir's coaching have included both a surprising ODI series defeat to Sri Lanka, their first in the country in 27 years, and a recent home series loss to New Zealand, which ended their 12-year unbeaten record in home Test series.
Gavaskar's remarks underscore concerns about India's preparedness for their challenging five-match series in Australia, set to begin on November 22. Further complicating matters is the uncertain availability of India's captain, Rohit Sharma, for the first Test in Perth.
Rohit may miss the opener due to personal reasons, and Gavaskar believes this uncertainty could harm the team's cohesion. During his conversation with India Today, Gavaskar called on Ajit Agarkar, the BCCI's selection committee chief, to provide clarity on the captaincy situation.
He suggested that if Rohit is unavailable, Agarkar should appoint Jasprit Bumrah as the captain for the entire series. "Captain should play the opening Test. It would have been different had he been injured," he explained. "But if a captain is not available right in the first Test match of the series, then it would put a lot of pressure on the deputy leader and that is not easy."
On Sports Tak, Gavaskar also questioned India's prospects for reaching the World Test Championship (WTC) final, emphasizing the importance of simply winning the series against Australia. "No, I don't. I actually think that India cannot beat Australia 4-0 in the Test series," he stated. "I don't want to talk about the World Test Championship Final. Now just focus on trying to win the series in Australia."
