Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has thrown his weight behind Jasprit Bumrah as the potential successor to Rohit Sharma in leading the Indian team on all formats. Lauding Bumrah's captaincy skills, Gavaskar emphasised his composed leadership and ability to guide the team without applying unnecessary pressure on players.
"He leads from the front and has a natural air of leadership," Gavaskar remarked during his appearance on Channel Seven. "He's not someone who will put undue pressure on teammates but expects them to deliver, knowing their responsibilities as members of the national team."

Jasprit Bumrah's stint as a Test captain, though brief, left a significant impression. He led India in two matches during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, including a remarkable 295-run victory in the series opener in Perth. Despite India losing the series 3-1, Bumrah's leadership drew praise for its effectiveness and calm demeanour.
In addition to his captaincy, Bumrah's personal performance in the series was nothing short of extraordinary. Bagging 32 wickets across five matches at a stellar average of 13.06, Bumrah was named Player of the Series. His relentless bowling, with a strike rate of 28.37, was a key factor in India's competitive performances, and Gavaskar suggested that his availability in critical moments could have turned the series in India's favour.
Reflecting on the Sydney Test, Gavaskar highlighted how a back spasm limited Bumrah's ability to bowl in the fourth innings, which allowed Australia to chase down a modest target of 162. "Bumrah's absence in the final innings was felt deeply. Even a short spell from him could have made a difference," Gavaskar noted.
Bumrah's ability to inspire and mentor his fellow fast bowlers also stood out during the series. Positioned strategically at mid-off or mid-on, he was consistently available to offer advice and motivate his teammates.
Given Bumrah's performances and leadership traits, Gavaskar expressed confidence in his potential to take over as India's Test captain soon. "I think he was absolutely brilliant, and I won't be surprised if he takes over very soon," Gavaskar concluded.
