Sunil Gavaskar picks a surprise candidate to replace Rohit Sharma as captain: 'Once he cements his place'

Batting great Sunil Gavaskar has brought in the name of Ishan Kishan who can become the captain of the Indian cricket team in the future. While the likes of Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant have often been touted as the next captain of the Indian cricket team after Rohit Sharma, Kishan's name has probably popped up for the first time.

Gavaskar has reckoned that Gill and Axar can be the top two most suitable candidates to replace Rohit Sharma. He especially stressed on Axar Patel, saying his growth in recent times has become immense.

“One is Shubman Gill and the other is Axar Patel [as future captains] because Axar comes in leaps and bounds, he just gets better every match. Giving him the responsibility as vice-captain will make them think. So, these are the two candidates in my view," Gavaskar told Sports Today.

He further added that Ishan Kishan can also be made the vice-captain and groomed as the future lead of the team. However, Gavaskar also said that Kishan will have to make his spot permanent in the India team.

"If there are others, somebody like Ishan Kishan, once he cements his place in the team. He can come into the reckoning as well,” he stated.

Naming Rahane Test vice-captain a lost opportunity: Gavaskar

Gavaskar also opined that there was no wrong in renaming Ajinkya Rahane as the vice-captain of the Indian Test team but the same opportunity could have been used to groom a youngster.

“There is nothing wrong in having him [Ajinkya Rahane] as the vice-captain, but a missed opportunity to groom a young player. At least, tell a young player that we are looking at you as a future captain. So, he starts to think as a future leader,” Gavaskar added.
