Sunrisers Hyderabad announce Aiden Markram as captain ahead of IPL 2023

Hyderabad, February 23: Indian Premier League side Sunrisers Hyderabad on Thursday (February 23) announced South African batter Aiden Markram as thei captain ahead of the upcoming IPL 2023.

Sunrisers Hyderabad, who were without a skipper following the release of former captain Kane Williamson, had released a teaser of their captaincy announcement on Wednesday (February 22).

And 24 hours later, the Hyderabad-based franchise revealed their captain for the upcoming season via their social media handles. SRH posted a video along with a caption: "THE. WAIT. IS. OVER. #OrangeArmy, say hello to our new captain Aiden Markram."

The Sunrisers had many options to pick their new captain, but they opted for Markram, who has achieved tremendous success recently as a skipper with the SRH's sister franchise, Sunrisers Eastern Cape, leading them to the inaugural SA 20 title.

In SA20, Sunrisers Eastern Cape finished third in the league stage after four wins in 10 matches and got past the two best sides Pretoria Capitals and Joburg Super Kings to lift the title.

SRH, who had released David Warner ahead of the 2022 auction, also released Williamson prior to the 2023 auction following back-to-back disappointing seasons in the IPL.

At the 2023 auction, they roped in Mayank Agarwal, the former captain of Punjab Kings, who many felt would takeover the reigns at SRH. The Sunrisers also had the option of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who has led the side as a stand-in skipper.

But the 2016 champions have gone with Markram, who has held leadership roles for different sides including the national team in One Day Internationals.

The 28-year-old, who was roped in by SRH in 2021, will be the ninth player to lead the Hyderabad-baser franchise in IPL after Williamson, Warner, Kumar Sangakkara, Bhuvneshwar, Manish Pandey, Cameron White, Shikhar Dhawan and Darren Sammy.

In his two seasons so far for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Markram has scored 527 runs and claimed one wicket with his off-breaks in 20 matches.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad will open their IPL 2023 campaign in a home tie against last season's runner up Rajasthan Royals at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Hyderabad on April 2.
