Sunrisers Hyderabad Handed IPL 2027 Warning as Pat Cummins Weighs Franchise Exit

Pat Cummins has raised fresh doubts over his IPL future, admitting that something may have to give as Australia head into one of the busiest schedules in recent cricket history.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad captain revealed that he could skip IPL 2027 altogether as he prioritises Australia's international commitments, including a blockbuster Test tour of India, the Ashes, and the ODI World Cup.

Cummins, who has battled back issues in recent years, suggested that franchise cricket would be the first thing sacrificed if workload management becomes necessary.

Why Pat Cummins Could Miss IPL 2027

Australia's 2027 calendar is stacked with major assignments.

The schedule begins with a five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in India during January and February before moving straight into the historic 150th anniversary Test against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in March.

A full Ashes campaign follows, with a potential World Test Championship final also on the horizon. To add to the workload, the ODI World Cup in southern Africa is scheduled for October and November.

That leaves very little room for recovery, especially for Australia's pace spearhead.

"Something has got to give at some stage next year and it's not going to be test matches or an ODI World Cup," Cummins told The Age.

The IPL's 20th edition is expected to run from March to May, meaning participation would leave Cummins moving directly from a demanding franchise season into an Ashes campaign.

Not a Definitive No from Pat Cummins

While Cummins acknowledged the challenge, he stopped short of ruling himself out completely.

Instead, he plans to discuss his availability with Sunrisers Hyderabad closer to the tournament.

"I will make a call a lot closer and work with the franchise to see what makes sense. Things can change. I've had a couple of injuries pop up, so I don't really want to lock in anything."

"The priorities for me are always the test matches and that ODI World Cup. I dare say if I play all of India, I need some sort of break before a pretty gruelling Ashes series," he added.

His comments highlight the increasingly difficult balancing act facing elite international cricketers as franchise leagues continue to expand around the world.

What It Means For Sunrisers Hyderabad

Cummins has become one of the most important figures in the SRH setup.

After taking over leadership responsibilities during IPL 2026, he guided Sunrisers Hyderabad into the playoffs and remained a central figure both on and off the field.

Although SRH's campaign ended in heartbreak following Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's stunning 97 off just 29 balls in the Eliminator, Cummins' leadership has been widely praised.

His potential absence in 2027 would leave the franchise facing a significant leadership vacuum, particularly given how heavily they have invested in building the team around him.

Australia Also Monitoring Hazlewood and Starc

Cummins also indicated that Australia's workload management plans may extend beyond just himself.

Both Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc could be rested or rotated during parts of Australia's home summer, particularly around the New Zealand series.

"It's possible. I think we're fairly open-minded to anything, as we've seen over the last couple of years," Cummins said.

"I see a world where we're potentially winding some bowlers down, even say at the back end of an Indian series if they don't look like they're going to play, to give them an extra rest ahead of the Ashes."

The comments suggest Cricket Australia is already planning carefully for a period that could define this generation of Australian cricketers.

The Bigger Issue Facing Modern Cricket

Cummins' situation also highlights a growing challenge for the sport.

With bilateral series, ICC tournaments, and franchise leagues all competing for space on an increasingly crowded calendar, players are being forced to make difficult choices.

For Australia, preserving the fitness of Cummins ahead of a five-Test India tour, the Ashes and a World Cup may simply be too important to risk.

"It's going to be a big push the next 18 months or so, but I think we'll look back on it hopefully and see it as one of the more rewarding periods of our career," Cummins said.

Whether that journey includes IPL 2027 remains one of the biggest questions facing both the Australian captain and Sunrisers Hyderabad heading into the next cycle.
