Super Over to decide World Cup 2015 final in case of a tie

Dubai, Jan 29: Super Over will be used to decide the winner of ICC World Cup 2015 final on March 29 at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), in case of a tie, the International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed today.

Earlier, according to the playing conditions, the trophy was to be shared in case of a tie or washout due to bad weather. But now the rule has been amended by the ICC Board during its meeting in Dubai yesterday (January 28). Super Over or One-over Eliminator has been in place to decide tied matches in Twenty20 formats.

Super Over to decide World Cup 2015 final in case of a tie

"If the Final is tied, abandoned or if the match is a no result, then the teams will be declared joint winners," ICC had said earlier. However, other knockout matches (Quarter-finals and Semi-finals) will not see the use of Super Over. In case of tied or abandoned quarter-finals and semi-finals, the team that finished higher in the Pool stage will progress.

Now, the ICC Board announced on Thursday, "The ICC Board reinstated the use of a Super Over in the event of a tie in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 final. This now replicates the arrangements for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 final and other recent ICC events where a winner will be determined on the day of the final (weather permitting), and a Super Over was the most credible way to separate the two sides."

Also another major change is for over-rate offence for captains. Now, skippers with over-rate offence before the World Cup will not carry them into the tournament.

"The ICC Board also approved a change to the application of ICC Code of Conduct offences relating to slow over-rates in ICC events so that captains do not carry any prior minor over-rate offence 'strikes' or over-rate suspensions from other series into an ICC event.

"This approval means all captains will enter the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 with no over-rate 'strikes' against their names, and they will only be suspended from playing in an ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 match if over-rate offences are committed during the event," ICC said.

This year's World Cup will be played in Australia and New Zealand from February 14 to March 29.
