Suresh Raina Under ED Scanner Over Promotion of Banned Betting Apps

Former Indian cricket star Suresh Raina, popularly known as "Mr. IPL," has landed in legal trouble after being summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the promotion of a banned betting app.

On August 12, 2015, the ED issued a summon to Raina, and earlier today, he appeared at the agency's Delhi office. According to reports, questioning began soon after his arrival.

The case stems from the promotion of betting platforms such as 1xbet, which have been banned in India by the government. The ED has been actively probing celebrities who endorsed these illegal apps, and Raina is the first high-profile cricketer to face interrogation in the current round of investigations.

Apart from the betting promotion angle, the probe also involves alleged hawala transactions, with authorities suspecting that funds may have been routed abroad illegally. Raina is expected to answer questions related to both matters.

The investigation may not stop with Raina. Two other celebrated Indian cricketers-Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh-could also come under the scanner for their alleged involvement in promoting similar betting platforms. Sources suggest they may be summoned for questioning soon. The crackdown on celebrity endorsements of banned apps has already implicated several prominent figures from the film industry.

The Indian government's ban on apps like 1xbet and Parimatch was implemented to curb illegal betting and protect consumers from fraudulent activities. However, endorsements by popular public figures have continued to draw users to these platforms, leading to increased regulatory action.

Despite this legal setback, Raina has remained active in cricket's exhibition and veterans' circuits. He was recently seen representing India Champions in the World Championship of Legends, a tournament that featured several former international stars.

As the ED's probe unfolds, the case has sparked wider debate over the responsibilities of celebrities in endorsing products and services. With the involvement of such high-profile names, the outcome of these investigations could set an important precedent for future cases involving endorsements of banned or illegal entities in India.

The cricketing fraternity and fans now await further developments, as the controversy around Raina's alleged role in the betting app promotion continues to unfold.
