Suryakumar Yadav compares India 2024 winners with 2026 T20 World Cup title defence squad

India captain Suryakumar Yadav has compared the 2024 T20 World Cup-winning team with the 2026 title defence squad, saying the earlier side drew on experienced enthusiasm while the current group is driven by youthful intensity. He noted the 2024 leadership of Rohit Sharma and the presence of Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja before their T20 retirements.

India’s T20 World Cup title defence in 2026 was driven by youthful intensity, captain Suryakumar Yadav said. Suryakumar compared the 2026 champions with the 2024 side that ended India’s ICC trophy wait.

Suryakumar spoke during a podcast interview and described how the two groups differed in mindset and experience.

Suryakumar said the 2024 unit leaned on senior figures and clearer role clarity. Suryakumar played that tournament under Rohit Sharma. The squad also included Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja. After the final in Barbados, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja retired from T20 internationals.

Suryakumar Yadav on T20 World Cup squads and experience

Suryakumar said the gap between the teams was small, while the energy felt different. "There was just a unnis bess ka farak minor difference between the two teams. Woh experience wala josh tha, Idhar ekdum khoon garam tha ladkon ka" Suryakumar said. Suryakumar added that 2024 felt like experienced drive, while 2026 had raw passion.

India entered the 2026 edition at home as strong favourites, Suryakumar indicated. Suryakumar said the 2024 side did not have that same comfort. That team had to push past mental pressure while chasing an ICC title. Suryakumar said that challenge shaped how the squad approached the campaign.

Suryakumar rejected the idea that 2026 was clearly better than 2024. "...in 2024, we had a lot of experience. And at that time, there was experience, and there were many good players. There are good players even now, but then, at that time, our team had a lot of experience, and everyone was perfectly defined for their role, said Suryakumar when asked if the 2026 squad was slightly superior to the one fielded in 2024.

India T20 World Cup 2026 at home and expectations

Suryakumar said hosting the tournament increased scrutiny and expectations. Suryakumar said the 2026 side had fewer matches of top-level experience. "This year, I can say that we had less experience but more enthusiasm. All the guys are 25 to 27 years old. It was necessary to explain to them how it feels to win a World Cup in India, when people will cheer so much for you, 50,000 people, a lakh people, in the stadium."

Suryakumar said the players needed to understand the scale of public support in India. "What kind of feeling that would be, it was necessary to tell them a little bit. Otherwise, in my opinion, if you look at teams skill-wise, theres only a slight difference in the T20 format. But I feel, this time there was more enthusiasm." Suryakumar said skill levels were close, despite different emotions.

Suryakumar also compared personal pressure across the two tournaments. The Mumbaikar said emotions stayed similar because both squads played for India. Still, the Indian skipper said the 2026 campaign felt stronger because it was at home. "I think emotions were almost similar. There too we were playing for India, we wanted to win the World Cup. In 26, the goal was the same, but the emotion of 26 was a bit more because we were playing in India."

Suryakumar said the venue mattered to the team’s motivation in 2026. "And we wanted to win the World Cup in India, and we wanted to win it in the same stadium in Ahmedabad, that was more important for us," Suryakumar added.
