Suryakumar Yadav likely to lead India in Australia T20Is after World Cup 2023, Sanju Samson to find place

By MyKhel Staff

Suryakumar Yadav is set to make his captaincy debut for India during the T20I series against Australia following the completion of World Cup 2023, reports have suggested. The star batter would get the opportunity in the absence of India T20I captain Hardik Pandya.

Reports have also suggested that NCA head VVS Laxman would chip in for head coach Rahul Dravid for the five-match T20I series which will kick off from November 23 in Visakhapatnam. The fifth T20I will be played in Hyderabad on December 3. Dravid's tenure as Team India coach is set to expire at the end of India's World Cup 2023 campaign.

“VVS Laxman has always been in charge when Rahul has taken a break and the same thing is likely to continue for the series just after the World Cup,” a BCCI source told PTI.

IND vs AUS T20Is: Sanju Samson, Asian Games gold-medallists to find place

Several members of India's gold medal-winning Asian Games squad will also feature in the team. Ruturaj Gaikwad, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma and Rinku Singh are almost certain of finding a place alongside Sanju Samson who did not find a place in India's Asia Cup, World Cup and Asian Games squad.

“There is time. Some of the guys will get a break after the World Cup. And yes, it will be an opportunity for someone like Ruturaj, Yashasvi, or Sanju to do well and cement their place. It’s up to the selectors who they want to see in that team,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

The likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja haven't featured in a single T20I match for India since the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. Jasprit Bumrah was the India captain in the T20I series against Ireland, however the pacer will very likely be rested as well alongside the likes of Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami.

Arshdeep Singh, Umran Malik, Mukesh Kumar, Prasidh Krishna and Avesh Khan are a few contenders who can form the crux of the pace unit against Australia. Ravi Bishnoi, Washington Sundar and Yuzvendra Chahal can feature in the spin department.
