Suryakumar Yadav set to Lose India T20 Captaincy despite winning T20 World Cup, Here's the Reason!

In a major shake-up just three months after guiding India to T20 World Cup glory on home soil, Suryakumar Yadav has been stripped of the T20I captaincy and is set to be left out of the national side for the foreseeable future.

The BCCI, along with the team management, selection committee, and head coach Gautam Gambhir, has decided to begin a new chapter with a fresh skipper. The move comes ahead of India's upcoming white-ball tours of Ireland and England, starting later this month.

Suryakumar Yadav set to Lose India T20 Captaincy despite winning T20 World Cup Here s the Reason

"The selection committee, BCCI and team management, in consultation with coach Gautam Gambhir, have decided that India should go with a new skipper from here on. Under Surya's captaincy, the team did win the T20 World Cup but keeping his form and future in mind, they felt it's time to move on," a BCCI official was quoted as saying The Indian Express.

The official further confirmed that Suryakumar will not be considered for selection in the upcoming matches, and the decision will be communicated to him shortly. The board is expected to name a new T20I captain soon.

Why is Suryakumar Yadav sacked as India Captain?

Despite his leadership triumph, Suryakumar's batting has been under the scanner for nearly two years. His struggles continued during the 2026 IPL season, where he scored only 270 runs in 13 innings at a low average of 20.76 for Mumbai Indians. A half-century against Rajasthan Royals in his final game offered little consolation.

Even in India's victorious World Cup campaign in March, questions lingered over his personal form. Suryakumar was appointed T20I captain after Rohit Sharma's retirement and started strongly by lifting the trophy, but his prolonged dip with the bat has ultimately forced the selectors to look ahead.

India will play two T20Is in Ireland followed by five matches in England. The revamped leadership will take charge as the team kicks off its preparations for the next white-ball cycle. The BCCI is likely to announce the new captain and the squads for both tours in the coming days.
