Suryakumar Yadav Undergoes Successful Sports Hernia Surgery in Germany, Eyes Return in August

India's T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav has successfully undergone surgery for a sports hernia in his lower right abdomen, with the procedure taking place in Munich, Germany.

The 34-year-old batter confirmed the news himself via social media, writing, "Life Update: Underwent surgery for a sports hernia in the lower right abdomen. Grateful to share that after a smooth surgery, I'm already on the road to recovery. Can't wait to be back."

PTI had earlier reported that Suryakumar was experiencing discomfort due to a sports hernia and was likely to go under the knife. A sports hernia refers to a soft tissue injury in the lower abdomen or groin area, often affecting tendons, ligaments, or muscles, and is commonly seen in athletes.

Following the surgery, Suryakumar is expected to begin his rehabilitation at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru in about two weeks.

India's upcoming white-ball assignment is a tour of Bangladesh in August, featuring three ODIs and as many T20Is. Suryakumar, who has not featured in the 50-over format since the 2023 ODI World Cup final, is likely to return to lead the T20I side in Chattogram on August 26.

This is the third time in as many years that the dynamic batter has gone through surgery. He previously underwent the same sports hernia operation in 2024 and had ankle surgery in 2023. Despite his injury setbacks, Suryakumar was an integral part of the Indian sides that won the 2023 Asia Cup and the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

With over 3,000 international runs to his name-including four centuries-Suryakumar's dominance has largely come in the T20I format, which accounts for more than 75% of his total runs and all four of his hundreds.

Before going in for surgery, the stylish right-hander was in top form for Mumbai Indians in the 2025 IPL season. He amassed 717 runs-second only to Orange Cap holder Sai Sudharsan (759 runs)-and was named Player of the Tournament. His efforts helped Mumbai reach the playoffs, though they eventually lost to Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2.

Following the IPL, Suryakumar also featured in the T20 Mumbai League, captaining Triumph Knights Mumbai North East and scoring 122 runs in five outings. As he begins his recovery journey, India will be eager to have their T20I captain back in action soon.
