Suryakumar Yadav’s Wrist Woes: From ‘SKY’ Highs to Post-Injury Struggles
In the match against Gujarat Titans in IPL 2026, Mumbai Indians' star batter Suryakumar Yadav had yet another low score of 15 off 10, drawing criticism from fans.
It was a freak wrist injury during the Buchi Babu tournament back in 2024 that may have altered the trajectory of India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav. Known for his fearless strokeplay and 360-degree batting range, Surya’s game appears to have undergone a noticeable shift since that setback.

Before vs After: A Stark Statistical Decline
Peak 'SKY’ Phase (2021 – June 2024)
Between 2021 and June 2024, Suryakumar Yadav was operating at an elite level in T20 cricket. He averaged a staggering 40-42, compiling 20 fifties and four centuries during this period. His strike rate and consistency made him one of the most dangerous batters in the format globally.

Post-Injury Phase (2024 – 2026)
However, since the wrist injury, there has been a significant dip in his output. Between 2024 and 2026, Surya’s average has dropped to 26-28, with only six fifties to his name. His strike rate, once his biggest weapon, has also seen a decline - a clear indicator that something isn’t quite right.
The IPL 2025 Exception
The only phase where Suryakumar briefly resembled his old self post-injury came during IPL 2025. He amassed 717 runs in 16 matches at an impressive strike rate of 167.91 and an average of 65.18, including five half-centuries.
Sources have attributed this exceptional run to the use of painkiller injections, which reportedly allowed him to swing the bat more freely despite the underlying wrist issue.

Lingering Injury Concerns
Sources suggest that the wrist injury remains severe enough to restrict Surya from returning to his peak 'SKY’ form. The lingering discomfort appears to be impacting both his shot selection and execution.
MyKhel, however, couldn't corroborate the injury. There was no official comment on the situation, when the writer reached out to BCCI officials for clarity.
Surgery Dilemma and Captaincy Pressure
It is also understood that Suryakumar Yadav may require surgery to fully recover. However, he is reportedly hesitant to undergo the procedure due to concerns over potentially losing his captaincy position.
At the same time, discussions around Shreyas Iyer’s form and his potential leadership role in the 2028 T20 World Cup have intensified the pressure on Surya to regain consistency quickly.
Current Form Raises Red Flags
Even in the ongoing IPL 2026 season, Surya’s performances have been below expectations. In six matches, he has managed just 121 runs at an average of 20.17, with only one half-century. For a player of his caliber, these numbers underline a worrying trend.

The Bigger Question
The larger concern remains whether the board is fully aware of the severity of his wrist condition. If the injury continues to hamper his performance, it not only affects Mumbai Indians but also India’s T20 plans moving forward.
For now, one thing is clear - the 'SKY’ that once lit up the cricketing world is struggling to shine at the same intensity. The question is: can he find his way back?
