The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) is set to introduce a new set of rules regarding over-rates. The CPL and WCPL (women's version) will be undergoing strict over-rate policy, and the team's failing to comply the rules will pay a heavy price.
The franchise T20 tournament will see the rules put into effect from this year's edition. According to reports, the third umpire will be in communication with on-field umpires to communicate the players about the status of their over-rates.

The bowling team will have to complete 20 overs within the allotted 85 minutes, with a special emphasis on 17th over onwards. It is also understood that DRS reviews, the time between two batters coming to crease, and time taken due to injuries or deliberate wasting by veterans won't be counted.
Here is a detailed look at all the over-rate rules for CPL and WCPL 2023 season-
1. Bowling side will have to complete the 17th Over before 72 minutes 15 seconds. Barring this, the fielding side will have to keep an extra player inside the 30-yard circle (5 in total) before the start of the 18th over.
2. The 18th over must be finished by 76 minutes and 30 seconds, barring which, two extra fielders must be inside the 30-yard circle before the start of the 19th over (Six in total).
3. The 19th over needs to be completed by 80 mins 45 seconds. Any team failing to complete it aby the aforementioned time will have to eliminate one fielder from the stadium before the 20th over, in addition to six players inside the circle.
The eliminated player can be chosen by the bowling team captain. Hence it is more of a Red Card like situation where the player will have to leave the field and the fielding team will be short of one player.
4. The batting team can't also waste time deliberately. Upon a warning, a repetition of time warning shall see 5 penalty runs deducted from the batting team's total.
The CPL starts from August 16 and it will continue till September 24.
