T20 World Cup 2024 AFG vs BAN: Rashid Khan Reprimanded by ICC for Throwing Bat During Bangladesh Clash

Tarouba (Trinidad), Jun 26: Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan received an official reprimand from the International Cricket Council (ICC) following an incident during the T20 World Cup Super 8 clash against Bangladesh.

The reprimand came after Rashid threw his bat on the ground in frustration when teammate Karim Janat refused a run in the final over of Afghanistan's innings.

The incident unfolded during a critical moment of the match when Rashid, eager to maximize the score, played a shot and called for a second run. Janat's refusal led to Rashid losing his temper and throwing his bat in a display of frustration.

This action led to Rashid being found in breach of Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. The article pertains to the inappropriate and/or dangerous throwing of a ball or any other item of cricket equipment at or near a player during an international match.

In the official release, the ICC stated, "Rashid was found to have breached Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment) at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an international match."

As a consequence, one demerit point has been added to Rashid's disciplinary record. This marks his first offence within 24 months. Rashid admitted to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction from Richie Richardson of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees, thereby negating the need for a formal hearing. The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Nitin Menon and Langton Rusere, third umpire Adrian Holdstock, and fourth umpire Ahsan Raza.

According to ICC regulations, Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player's match fee, along with one or two demerit points.

Despite the incident, Afghanistan secured a victory over Bangladesh by eight runs via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method in the rain-affected match, propelling them into the semifinals of the T20 World Cup for the first time in any ICC event. Afghanistan is set to face South Africa in the first semifinal in Tarouba, Trinidad.

Rashid Khan's leadership and performance have been pivotal in Afghanistan's journey through the tournament. As they prepare for the semifinals, the team will look to build on their momentum and aim for a historic spot in the finals.
