T20 World Cup 2024: 'Earth Shook When Afghanistan Beat Australia' - Was There An Earthquake In St Vincent?

Afghanistan pulled off a stunning 21-run win over mighty Australia in the Super Eights of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 with Gulbadin Naib's four-wicket haul overshadowing Pat Cummins' hat-trick to produce one of most memorable days in Afghan cricket.

Using the slower balls smartly on a difficult batting wicket, Afghanistan defended their total of 148 for six by bundling out Australia for 127 to up the Group 1 semi-final spots with all four teams in with a chance of qualifying for the last four.

Afghanistan celebration coincides with earthquake in St Vincent

Both Australia and Afghanistan now have one win each with one match to go, while India sit atop the table with two wins from as many games. Afghan players jumped in joy and were joined by their support staff members to celebrate the win as the earth literally shook in St Vincent.

Was there an earthquake in St Vincent when Afghanistan beat Australia?

According to reports from the ground, moments after the final delivery of Afghanistan's historic win over Australia, an earthquake of 6.2 magnitude struck 97 kilometers northwest of Trinidad's Port of Spain, with lengthy tremors felt in St. Vincent and northeastern Guyana.

Former Indian cricket Unmukt Chand, who is in Trinidad, took to social media and said the earth shook literally when Afghanistani players celebrated victory over Australia.

"Massive earthquake felt in Trinidad and the nearby Carribean islands as soon as Afghanistan beat Australia. Like literally," Chand posted on X as fans saw the funny side, but there were tremors really felt in St Vincent.

Coming back to the match, Afghanistan openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz (60) and Ibrahim Zadran (51) forged a 118-run partnership setting up base for a challenging total but Cummins' hat-trick restricted Rashid Khan's side to a manageable total.

Australia were reduced to 32 for 3 in the powerplay after Naveen-ul-Haq struck twice but Glenn Maxwell slammed a 41-ball 59 to somewhat resurrect the chase. However Naib's timely strikes proved crucial in toppling the 2021 champions.

The Afghans exacted revenge for their defeat in Mumbai during the ODI World Cup. Maxwell had snatched victory from Aghans at that time and on Sunday (June 23) too he threatened to deny them but Naib's brilliance ensured them the win.

Australia, who stare at early elimination from the World Cup, must now win their match against India on Monday (June 24) and also hope that Afghanistan lose to Bangladesh in their next match.
