T20 World Cup 2024: Former New Zealand Opener Named in Co-Hosts USA Squad

Former New Zealand opener and 2015 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup finalist Corey Anderson has been named in the preliminary squad by the co-hosts USA for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024.

Anderson had quit New Zealand Cricket in December 2020 after representing the Kiwis in 93 matches across three formats. The all-rounder became eligible to represent the United States in international cricket three years later in 2023.

The 33-year-old first featured in the Major League Cricket (MLC) tournament and represented USA recently in a series against Canada, making two appearances for the T20 World Cup 2024 co-hosts.

Anderson will be part of USA's squad which will be led by wicketkeeper-batter Monank Patel with some familiar names alongside performers from the recent T20I series against Canada, which they won 4-0.

In a boost to their bowling attack, pacer Ali Khan has been passed fit for the tournament, shaking off a hamstring injury which kept him out of the Canada series.

The 33-year-old pacer has featured in several domestic leagues around the world, including a stint with Indian Premier League side Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 2020 season.

There are other familiar names in the mix, including Saurabh Netravalkar, the most capped USA player, Aaron Jones, and opener Steven Taylor, their highest run-scorer in international cricket. Off-spinner Milind Kumar, who made his debut recently, has also been included in the squad.

One notable omission is former Indian cricketer Umukt Chand, who was not part of the squad for the T20I series against Canada last month, hinting his possible exclusion from the squad. Here is a look at USA's preliminary squad for the T20 World Cup:

USA, the co-hosts, are in Group A alongside India, Pakistan, Canada and Ireland. They will open their group stage campaign against Canada on June 1 followed by a clash against Pakistan on June 6 before they face India and Ireland on June 12 and 14 respectively.
