Former South African cricketer Herschelle Gibbs asserts that South Africa should adopt a flexible approach to their batting order in the T20 World Cup 2024, citing the formidable batting prowess of their middle-order players.
Gibbs, known for his explosive batting style, particularly in limited-overs cricket, emphasizes the need for adaptability in decision-making, especially in the fast-paced environment of T20 cricket.

Gibbs advocates for proactive decision-making, and told Sportsboom.com, "A lot has been said about the firepower in the middle order. I would like to see them being proactive in decision-making."
He believes that batters like Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, and Tristan Stubbs possess similar levels of firepower and can excel in various batting positions as per the match situation. "All these batters can bat at any position," he asserts, challenging conventional notions of fixed batting orders.
In Gibbs's view, the Proteas should remain open to adapting their strategies based on the match scenario.
"If the Proteas are two down, I would not go with a set batting order. You could use either one of the three as a finisher," he suggests. He highlights the versatility of players like Miller, who have previously excelled as finishers, and believes that their hitting abilities make them valuable assets regardless of their batting positions.
Regarding bowling tactics, Gibbs underscores the importance of unpredictability, stating, "You can't be predictable as to how you use your bowlers." He emphasizes the role of captain Aiden Markram in making strategic bowling changes to keep the opposition guessing. Drawing from his own experience as a cricketer, Gibbs emphasizes the need for dynamic and flexible strategies to succeed in the fast-paced T20 format.
Looking ahead to the T20 World Cup, Gibbs expresses confidence in the preparation of South African players currently participating in the T20I series in the West Indies. He identifies newcomer Ryan Rickleton as a player with the potential to secure a spot in the starting XI based on his performance in domestic cricket.
Gibbs anticipates challenging conditions in the USA, emphasizing the importance of players' adaptability to different pitch and weather conditions. He believes that spinners like Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi will play crucial roles in the tournament, particularly on surfaces offering assistance to spin bowling.
