T20 World Cup 2024: How Is IPL Negatively Impacting Pakistan's Preparations For Showpiece Event In USA And West Indies?
In the fast-paced realm of T20 cricket, the Indian Premier League (IPL) stands as a towering pillar of excellence, drawing the world's finest talents and setting an unmatched standard for competition.
However, beneath its glitz and glamour lies a shadow that looms large over Pakistan's T20 cricket aspirations, casting doubt on player participation and the country's international standing in the sport.

At the heart of this issue lies the glaring absence of Pakistani players from the IPL. Hindered by longstanding geopolitical tensions, Pakistani cricketers find themselves systematically excluded from the league, thereby depriving them of invaluable exposure to top-tier T20 cricket.
While players from other cricketing nations benefit from their IPL engagements, Pakistani cricketers are gearing up to play T20I series against New Zealand (at home), Ireland and England (away) respectively to prepare for the World Cup.
While facing top-cricketing nations such as New Zealand and England are ideal in preparation, ongoing IPL has left its impact on the five-match series. With key New Zealand players engrossed in IPL commitments, the visiting team is fielding a depleted squad against Pakistan, thereby diluting the competitive intensity of the series.
Big names such as Kane Williamson (Gujarat Titans), Devon Conway (Chennai Super Kings), Daryl Mitchell (CSK), Rachin Ravindra (CSK), Mitchell Santner (CSK), Lockie Ferguson (Royal Challengers Bangalore), Trent Boult (Rajasthan Royals), Glenn Philipps (Sunrisers Hyderabad) have all opted IPL over national duty.
To make it worse, Adam Milne and Finn Allen are ruled out too with injuries, forcing New Zealand to name Wicketkeeper Tom Blundell and uncapped all-rounder Zak Foulkes as their replacements. This subsequently means that a series victory for Pakistan seems too obvious and may not mean that the Men in Green have their best side when things get down to business in the USA.
Things look no different for the away tours later on with 13 English players currently competing in the cash-rich league, including captain Jos Buttler and vice-captain Moeen Ali. Sam Curran, Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, Chris Woakes, Phil Salt are the other key names plying their trade in India.
Of course, Ireland have almost the entire of their side available for the tour but they are no competitor to Pakistan and the Irish need the series more than Pakistan do.
