T20 World Cup 2024: Why are the Super Eight Matches already decided? What is ICC Seeding and How it Works?

The fixtures for the Super Eights stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup have been largely pre-determined, pending any significant upsets.

The ICC Men's T20 World Cup, featuring 20 teams, is divided into four groups of five for the group stages. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super Eights.

In the Super Eights, Group 1 will include the top teams from Group A and Group C, alongside the second-best from Group B and D. Meanwhile, Group 2 will feature the leaders from Group B and D, and the second-placed teams from Group A and C.

But there is a major twist in the groups of the Super Eights due to the pre-determined ICC seedings. Unlike previous editions, the ICC has decided the fixtures in advance, reducing the influence of first-round standings.

What is ICC Seeding?

Teams were seeded based on rankings before the start of the tournament. And now irrespective of the finishes, the seeding will be retained for the second round and that will determine the next round matches.

T20 World Cup 2024 Seedings

Seeding Group A Group B Group C Group D
1 India England New Zealand South Africa
2 Pakistan Australia West Indies Sri Lanka
3 Ireland Namibia Afghanistan Bangladesh
4 Canada Scotland Uganda Netherlands
5 USA Oman Papua New Guinea Nepal

ICC Seeding Explained

For instance, even if Australia tops Group B and England finishes second, England will still proceed as B1 and Australia as B2. That is why, the match between India and Australia is already pre-decided and these two teams will lock horns on June 24.

In case of any team not qualifying between the top two seeds in a group, the other team will replace the seeding position of the eliminated team. Suppose from Group D, South Africa gets eliminated and Sri Lanka qualifies. Even in that case, Sri Lanka will go through as D2 and the other team (Bangladesh/Netherlands/Nepal) which goes through will occupy the D1 position.

Based on current standings as of June 10, the Super Eight groups are likely to include: India, Australia, Afghanistan (replacing New Zealand), and either Sri Lanka or Bangladesh in Group One. Group Two might consist of the USA, Scotland, West Indies, and South Africa.

This is not the first time the Super Eight groups have been pre-determined. The ICC used a similar approach in the first four editions of the T20 World Cup (2007, 2009, 2010, and 2012).
