By MyKhel Staff

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has appointed Jamaican sprint legend Usain Bolt as the ambassador for the upcoming ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled to take place in the West Indies and the USA from June 1 to June 29, 2024.

Bolt's selection as an ambassador underscores his global appeal and remarkable athletic achievements, making him an ideal representative for the grandeur of the upcoming T20 World Cup.

His unparalleled success, including the historic 'Triple-Triple' feat at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, has cemented his status as a sporting icon transcending boundaries.

The Olympic champion's journey to fame began at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where he secured gold medals in the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay, all in world-record times. Bolt currently holds world records in the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay, with staggering times of 9.58 secs, 19.19 secs, and 36.84 secs respectively.

In his role as ambassador, Bolt will play a pivotal part in promoting the event, starting with an appearance in the official anthem music video alongside renowned artists Sean Paul and Kes. Additionally, he will grace T20 World Cup matches in the West Indies and engage in fan-oriented events aimed at bolstering cricket's presence in the United States.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Bolt conveyed, "I am thrilled to be an ambassador for the upcoming ICC Men's T20 World Cup. Coming from the Caribbean where cricket is a part of life, the sport has always held a special place in my heart, and I look forward to attending West Indies matches at the World Cup and making a contribution to the growth of cricket globally.

Bolt also emphasized the significance of expanding cricket's footprint in the US, noting its potential impact on the sport's inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, the largest sports market worldwide.

"While I will of course be supporting West Indies at the World Cup, getting the sport into the US is big for cricket. It's the biggest sports market in the world and the energy that we will bring for the T20 World Cup is a huge opportunity leading towards cricket's inclusion in the LA Olympics in 2028," the eight-time Olympic Gold Medallist added further.

Geoff Allardice, CEO of the ICC, hailed Bolt's appointment, stating, "Usain Bolt is a global icon, and we are delighted to have him as an Ambassador for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 to engage with a new generation of fans. His unparalleled achievements and dynamic persona make him an ideal fit for this role, adding an exciting dimension to the World Cup."

With Bolt's involvement, the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 promises to be an electrifying spectacle, offering fans worldwide an unforgettable experience. The tournament kicks off with the opening match between co-hosts USA and Canada at the Grand Prairie Cricket Stadium in Dallas, Texas on Saturday (June 1).
