T20 World Cup 2024: Irfan Pathan Wanted Star Bowler as Team India Vice-Captain Instead Of Hardik Pandya

By MyKhel Staff

The BCCI has announced a 15-member India squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024-led by Rohit Sharma. The selectors showed faith in underfire Hardik Pandya by appointing him the vice-captain of the side, which surprised several experts and pundits.

Former India cricketer turned commentator and cricket expert, Irfan Pathan, shared his insights on the selection process, particularly focusing on the choice of Hardik as Rohit's deputy. Amidst the discussions, Pathan hinted at an alternative that might have been looked at by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel.

While recognising the rationale behind continuity in leadership, Pathan suggested an alternative perspective - the potential candidacy of Jasprit Bumrah for the vice-captaincy role.

Bumrah, known for his skill and composure under pressure, could have offered a different dynamic to the team's leadership structure. His consistency and proven track record in crucial matches make him a strong contender for such a role.

Pathan's observations, shared during the Star Sports Press Room Show and Ticket to World Cup, shed light on the intricacies of team selection and the importance of strategic planning.

Pathan said, "To succeed in tournaments like the World Cup, it's imperative that every player is treated fairly and equally. So, now, coming back to your question about Hardik Pandya being vice-captain, I understand the rationale behind it due to the importance of continuity in leadership.

"However, considering the current performance, the selectors opting for continuity may be understandable. Yet, I believe someone like Bumrah wouldn't have been a bad choice either."

Rinku Singh - the finisher - ignored by selectors

Another key point highlighted by Pathan was the need for clarity in planning, emphasising the significance of a well-defined direction for the team. He pointed out instances where the selection process seemed to lack transparency, such as the exclusion of Rinku Singh from the T20 World Cup squad despite earlier considerations.

"Look, I am very disappointed that Rinku Singh is not included in the team because he played a crucial role, specifically in finishing games for his franchise last year.

"You see, he demonstrated that ability last year. Moreover, when he represented India, he showcased the same skills. So, when you maintain a strike rate of 170+ and an average close to 60-70, and still don't get selected, it's incredibly disheartening," the former left-arm pacer added further.

Reflecting on the strategic shifts post the T20 World Cup, Pathan acknowledged the team's move towards including experienced players for their invaluable insights. However, he raised concerns about the consistency and commitment of certain players, stressing the importance of regular participation in domestic cricket to serve Indian cricket effectively. Pathan emphasised the need for fair treatment of all players, regardless of their stature, emphasizing cricket's essence as a team sport.
