West Indies wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran on Tuesday (June 18) surpassed several milestones during his match-winning knock against Afghanistan in the final group stage game of the T20 World Cup 2024 in St Lucia.
Afghanistan bowlers felt the wrath of Pooran, who has been in punishing mood since the start of the year as the left-handed batter smashed 98 off 53 balls to take West Indies to 218/5, the highest total of the ongoing marquee event.

With his knock of 98, Pooran registered the highest individual score of the T20 World Cup 2024, surpassing the previous best of 94 by USA's Aaron Jones, who played a match-winning knock against Canada in the tournament opener.
The southpaw also entered the record books for maximums with 8 sixes during his knock of 98 against Afghanistan. With those 8 maximums, Pooran hit the third joint highest sixes in an innings in T20 World Cup.
Pooran's compatriot and T20 legend Chris Gayle holds the record for most sixes in an innings in T20 World Cup with 11 sixes followed by USA's Jones, who hit 10 maximums against Canada earlier in the 2024 edition.
Pooran went level with South Africa batter Rilee Rossouw with those eight maximums in Tuesday's match. Here is a look at most sixes by a batter in a T20 World Cup innings:
Pooran also became the sixth batter to hit 500 sixes or more in the shortest format across all competitions with his 8 maximums against Afghanistan. Here is a look at players with most sixes in T20 cricket:
While he entered the top 5 in most lists, Pooran overtook Gayle for most sixes by a West Indies batter in T20 Internationals during his knock against Afghanistan. Here is a look at the top 5 West Indies six-hitters in T20Is:
Overall, Pooran is just behind Indian captain Rohit Sharma (194 sixes), former New Zealand opener Martin Guptill (173 sixes), England white-ball skipper Jos Buttler (130 sixes) and Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell (129 sixes) for most sixes in T20Is.
As mentioned earlier, it has been a terrific year for Pooran, who has taken six-hitting to a different level alongside South Africa's Heinrich Klaasen. The duo were close in the battle, but the West Indian has taken a big lead with his power-hitting in the T20 World Cup 2024.
