T20 World Cup 2024: Pakistan's Three Area of Concerns Ahead of Squad Announcement

By Biswajit Biswas

Pakistan cricket is grappling with multiple areas of concern as they gear up for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, with issues ranging from faltering opening partnerships to a fragile middle order and key players succumbing to injuries.

The problems unravelled during the recently-concluded five-match T20 series against a second-string New Zealand, who went back home with their heads held high as the series ended 2-2.

T20 World Cup 2024 Pakistan

Who will be the opening duo?

One of the primary worries for Pakistan is the instability in their opening combination. Despite attempts to solidify the position, opener Saim Ayub has failed to deliver consistently, leaving Pakistan's top-order vulnerability exposed.

The low strike rates of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan further exacerbate the concern, as although they manage to score runs, their inability to accelerate could prove detrimental in crucial T20 encounters.

Injury-ridden middle-order

Adding to their woes is the fragility of Pakistan's middle order. The recent spate of injuries to key players Azam Khan, Mohammad Rizwan, and Irfan Niazi has compounded Pakistan's selection dilemma.

With the trio sidelined due to various injuries, including calf and hamstring issues, Pakistan faces the daunting task of filling crucial positions with capable replacements ahead of the World Cup.

Also With no reliable finisher in sight, the team has struggled to close out innings effectively. Iftikhar Ahmed has been entrusted with the finishing role but has failed to live up to expectations, leaving Pakistan with a glaring gap in their batting lineup.

Death bowling

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is under immense pressure to address these concerns as they prepare to announce the squad for the tournament on or before May 1.

However, with uncertainties looming over the performance of potential candidates like Saim Ayub and Usman Khan, and the lackluster displays from seasoned players like Imad Wasim and Mohammad Amir, the PCB faces a daunting task in ensuring a competitive and balanced team for the global event.

Shaheen Afridi took eight wickets against New Zealand but death bowling still remains a concerned as a lot will hinge on the likes of Amir and Naseem Shah to get their yorkers right before heading to the USA.

As the countdown to the T20 World Cup 2024 begins, Pakistan finds itself grappling with a myriad of challenges that threaten to derail their campaign. From shaky opening partnerships to a brittle middle order and the absence of key players due to injuries, the road ahead looks arduous for Pakistan cricket as they strive to overcome these obstacles and stake their claim in the tournament.
