T20 World Cup 2024 kicked off on Friday (June 1) with the first round group stage, while the action is set to continue with the Super 8 followed by the semi-finals, while the tournament is pencilled in for conclusion with the final on June 29.
The 2024 edition is the largest in terms of teams competing as 20 teams will battle for the coveted title, starting with the group stage, which will see four groups of five teams each will face each other from their respective groups in single round-robin format.

The winners and runners up at the end of the first round group stage will progress to the Super 8, which will also see the eight teams divided into two groups of four teams with the top two teams earning a spot in the semi-final and then the winners of last 4 enter the final.
While that gives clarity of the format, there is another thing that needs clarification as the T20 World Cup 2024 is likely to be affected by rain. Match 6 between England and Scotland fell victim to the rains in the Caribbean.
T20 World Cup 2024 is being held in the US and the Caribbean across 9 venues in 9 cities. In the US, Dallas, New York and Florida will host the matches, while Tarouba, Bridgetown, North Sound, Providence, Gros Islet and Kingstown will stage games in the West Indies.
There is chance of rain over the next few weeks as per the weather aggregators on the scheduled match days at the aforementioned cities. So, that brings us to the question as to what happens if it rains during T20 World Cup 2024 matches? Here is a look at the T20 World Cup 2024 Rain Rules:
While there is a reserve day only for the first semi-final and the final, none of the other matches, including the group stage and Super 8 will have a reserve day. So, what happens if rain or any other conditions do not allow play to start on time?
A T20 World Cup match is contested in T20 format (20 overs for each teams). And the match should be completed within 3 hours and 10 minutes including the innings break of 20 minutes as well as the mid-innings break.
If weather or any other conditions interrupt the match, there is an extra 60 minutes or 90 minutes to complete the first round group stage and Super 8 match. So, why the two different extra times?
As per the ICC playing conditions for the T20 World Cup 2024, for the group stage and Super 8 matches that start at 10:30 AM Local Time, 1 PM Local Time and 3 PM Local Time, an additional 90 minutes will be available to complete the match.
Meanwhile for the group stage and Super 8 matches that start at 7:30 PM Local Time and 8:30 PM Local Time, an extra time of 60 minutes will be available for completion of the games. The extra time is allowed when the match is delayed by unavoidable circumstances
If extra time is required to be used, it will be taken in the following sequence. In the event of a delayed start or interruption, the provision of 60 or 90 minutes extra time is to be used first and then the reduction in the innings change interval (if applicable).
As per the T20 World Cup playing conditions, when playing time has been lost, the revised number of overs to be bowled in the match will be based on a rate of 14.11 overs per hour in the total remaining time available for play (that is also taking the extension window of 60 or 90 minutes into account).
As per the playing conditions, to get a result in the group stage and Super 8, a minimum of 5 overs have to be bowled to the team batting second subject to a result not being achieved earlier. So, at least both teams will need to face 5 overs each to determine a result in the first two rounds.
But, if the weather or any other interruptions are not very long, the overs are reduced keeping in mind playing duration of the match. The result also will be determined via Duckworth Lewis Stern (DLS) method, should the rain interrupt play during the two innings.
In case a five-over a side game is also not possible within the remaining permitted playing hours including extended window, then the match will be considered as no result with both teams sharing a point each in the group stage and the Super 8 stage.
