New Delhi, Jun 18: Former New Zealand cricketer and captain, Stephen Fleming, shared his insights on India's strategy for the upcoming Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup in an exclusive interview with ESPN Cricinfo's Timeout show.

T20 World Cup 2024 Stephen Fleming highlights importance of Kuldeep Yadav in Super 8 for Team India

Is Kuldeep Yadav vital for Team India in the Caribbean?

Fleming highlighted the significance of Kuldeep Yadav in the squad, stating, "I think Kuldeep would come in to provide that extra bit of wicket-taking flair if the wickets do provide the turn as they get a little bit more used and you get closer to the end of the tournament." He stressed the necessity for flexibility, acknowledging that the Indian team must take advantage of varying conditions to maximize their performance.

Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja Playing Together

When asked about the possibility of playing two left-arm spinning all-rounders, Fleming expressed reservations. "I don't think so; sometimes it's hard to manage two players to do the same thing. Mitchell Santner and Ravindra Jadeja sort of do the same role for us in CSK, and we sometimes find it hard around selection to get eight overs of exactly the same skill set," he explained.

He praised both Jadeja and Axar Patel for their unique abilities, noting that while Jadeja can be exceptionally dangerous in the right conditions, Axar offers a different type of attack, suitable for varying pitches like those in New York.

Regarding India's opening pair and overall team composition for the World Cup, Fleming acknowledged the challenges of making tough selection decisions. "Leaving out top quality players is always difficult, but having a plan and sticking to it is crucial," he said.

He commended the Indian selectors for assembling a team that appears tailored for the finals, with a strong emphasis on spin and a balanced lineup. Fleming observed, "They've picked a team that they think may be playing on a turning track, which will give them their best chance at the top and has good balance."

Weaknesses in Team India?

Addressing any potential vulnerabilities for Team India, Fleming downplayed significant concerns. "There shouldn't be any vulnerability because there's so much talent to pick from," he stated.

He identified New York as a potential challenge due to seam-friendly conditions and uneven bounce but praised the Indian team's mature handling of those challenges. "The last game was very mature the way they chased down the title, so they got through that, and I would expect this side to get a little bit stronger," Fleming added.

As India heads into the critical stages of the T20 World Cup, Fleming's insights underscore the importance of strategic flexibility, smart selection, and leveraging the depth of talent within the team. With seasoned players and a well-balanced squad, India is well-positioned to tackle the challenges ahead and vie for the coveted World Cup title.
