T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8: Defending champions England defeated West Indies by eight wickets in their first Super 8 match of the T20 World Cup 2024 against West Indies at Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet in St Lucia on Thursday, June 20.
England chased down the 181-run target in just 17.3 overs on the back of an unbeaten 87-run knock from Phil Salt. The England opener's 47-run knock consisted of seven fours and five sixes. His partnership with opening partner Jos Buttler (25) consisted of 67 runs off 46 balls.

Spin-bowling all-rounder Moeen Ali walked in at three but could score just 13 off 10, but Jonny Bairstow gave Salt the perfect company with unbeaten 48 off 26 balls. Salt collected 30 runs from the 16th over from Romario Shepherd.
The dominance of England batters was such that they collected 58 runs without losing any wicket in the powerplay. They scored 25 runs for the loss of one wicket from overs seven to 10 before bouncing back with 58 runs for the loss of one wicket in the next five overs. England's next 40 runs came in 15 runs.
Earlier, England managed to restrict West Indies to 180/4 after opting to bat first. West Indies were cruising at 102/1 after 12 overs.
However, they were pegged back by a very good bowling display by England in the middle and death overs. No West Indies batter hit a fifty despite each of their top four batters getting starts. Opener Brandon Kings (23 off 13) was looking good but got retired hurt due to a groin injury. Jofra Archer, Liam Livingstone, Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali picked a wicket each.
Brief Scores: West Indies 180/4 in 20 overs (Rovman Powell 36, Nicholas Pooran 36, Sherfane Rutherford 28 not out) lost to England: 181/2 in 17.3 overs (Phil Salt 87 not out, Jonny Bairstow 48 not out) by 8 wickets.
