The match, which had a semi-final spot at stake, required Bangladesh to chase down a modest target of 116 runs within 12.1 overs to keep their hopes alive. Despite a promising start, Bangladesh faltered and ultimately fell short, failing to qualify for the semi-finals.

Bangladesh's chase began with aggressive intent as opener Litton Das set the tone early on. However, Afghanistan's bowlers struck back with key wickets, stalling the momentum. At the nine-over mark, Bangladesh was still in the hunt at 73/5, with Das looking in fine form. The match seemed within reach, but the dismissal of Towhid Hridoy marked a turning point as the team's aggressive approach waned.
Reflecting on the game, Tamim Iqbal, speaking to ESPNcricinfo, criticized the lack of determination in the latter stages of the chase. He believed that Bangladesh should have maintained their aggressive approach even at the risk of being bowled out cheaply.
"Bangladesh will be very disappointed. I think Bangladesh should have gone for the chase, even if it meant getting bowled out for 70 or 80. They anyways went on to lose the match, but they had the opportunity to do something very special and these kinds of opportunities do not come around very often, especially after not winning anything in the Super 8," he stated.
Tamim highlighted that the team showed glimpses of intent but failed to sustain it throughout the innings. "In patches, Bangladesh looked like they were going for the chase, but then wickets fell and there was less intent in the batting in a few of the overs.
"At least if they had tried to chase it down and lost by 30-40 runs, people would have understood that there was an opportunity and we tried and we failed, but that is fine. Neither did we win the game, nor did we try to chase it down," he added.
Ultimately, Bangladesh managed to score only 82 runs by the 12.1 over mark, falling significantly short of their target. They ended their Super 8 campaign without a single victory, finishing on a disappointing note. Tamim Iqbal's comments reflect the frustration of a missed opportunity and the need for a more fearless approach in high-stakes matches .
