T20 World Cup 2024: Two Glaring Reasons why Nassau County Stadium in New York is the Worst

The T20 World Cup 2024 is up and running but many shortcomings of ICC are coming to light as the tournament progresses.

Although we have seen some decent cricket in the tournament, some of the ICC decisions have raised serious questions about their preparedness for the tournament. Yes, cricket is a business, but if you are to conduct a successful one, you have to make sure certain things are uncompromised.

T20 World Cup 2024

As India and Pakistan are taking on at the Nassau County Stadium in New York, the stadium has already garnered various negative attention towards it, and rightly so. ICC decided to host the India-Pakistan flagship clash in New York, probably eyeing the incorporation of the game in the United States of America.

A vacant park was identified at the Long Island and was then turned into a stadium. Many of the USA residents in Nassau County were startled to see the barren patch getting transformed into an international cricket stadium!

Within four months, ICC managed to erect the stadium, but to be honest, the Nassau County Stadium will be written in folklore for all the wrong reasons. And believe it or not, as the World Cup in USA concludes, the stadium will be dismantled.

There can be a justification from ICC on the stadium, but so far what we have witnessed, the Nassau County Stadium is the worst if we rank the World Cup venues over the years. Here are the reasons-

A Horrendous Pitch

The pitch at the New York stadium has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. The double-paced deck has behaved strangely, as some balls have gone down while others flying upwards from a good length. Clearly, the used decks at the stadium have been below par and can damage or injure players anytime. The pitch on which the Sri Lanka vs South Africa match was played was not fit for an international match, and moreover we have seen the same across the pitches.

ICC has clearly fallen short in preparing the pitch as we have witnessed balls taking a leap out of nowhere, making it a dangerous deck to play at. The drop-in pitches were grown in Florida and then they were transported to New York.

No Floodlights

As it was raining during the India vs Pakistan match, the sky was dark and it was the same around the stadium. The Nassau County stadium doesn't have floodlights, hence batting can be a huge issue if there is a visibility issue due to clouds and rainy weather.

At any international cricket stadium, Floodlights are a primary component and it is a shocker that ICC was so lacklustre in their plans. The matches at the New York Stadium are day matches, but they should have prepared thoroughly to deal with all the adversities.

It is to be seen how ICC learns from this diabolical mistake. The pitch at any stadium for an international event has to provide sporting conditions, but this New York stadium is far from it. Also, the surrounding infrastructure also lacks big time. The race to erect the stadium in a record time was successful, but it has been a disaster since.
