T20 World Cup 2026: Afghanistan's Ibrahim Zadran dedicates Award to Coach Jonathan Trott
In a fitting farewell to one of the most transformative figures in Afghan cricket, opener Ibrahim Zadran dedicated his Player of the Match award to head coach Jonathan Trott after Afghanistan's commanding 82-run victory over Canada in their final Group D match of the T20 World Cup 2026.
Played in Chennai, the game marked Trott's last day in charge, as the former England batsman had announced his decision to step down following the tournament.

Afghanistan, already eliminated from Super 8 contention after earlier setbacks, including a heartbreaking double Super Over loss to South Africa and an opening defeat to New Zealand, entered the match eager to end on a high. Batting first after Canada won the toss and opted to field, Afghanistan posted a formidable 200/4.
Ibrahim Zadran showing his class
Zadran anchored the innings with an unbeaten 95 off 56 balls, the highest individual score by an Afghan batter in T20 World Cup history. His knock featured precise timing, powerful boundaries, and composure under pressure, surpassing previous records while missing out on a century by just five runs.
The total proved far beyond Canada's reach. Despite some resistance, they were restricted to 118/8 in their 20 overs, with Afghanistan's bowlers maintaining tight lines and capitalizing on early breakthroughs. The victory provided a much-needed morale boost for a team that had shown glimpses of brilliance but faltered in key moments throughout the group stage.

At the post-match presentation, Zadran's gesture stole the spotlight. He handed his POTM award to Jonathan Trott, who is set to leave his role as head coach.
"I would also like to dedicate this Player of the Match award to our coach, Jonathan Trott. I've learned so much from him - he has encouraged and supported not just me, but the entire team. Under his guidance, we've achieved a lot in international cricket and ICC events. This is his last day with us, and we will truly miss him. I wish him all the very best for the future," Zadran said.
Under Trott's leadership since taking over, Afghanistan achieved historic milestones, including a semifinal appearance in the 2024 T20 World Cup with landmark wins over powerhouses like Australia and New Zealand. Captain Rashid Khan had earlier grown emotional about Trott's departure, praising him for elevating standards and instilling discipline.
