T20 World Cup 2026: Archer, Jacks Rout Sri Lanka After Salt’s 62 as England Win by 51 Runs

Pallekele, Feb 22: England produced a clinical all-round display to defeat Sri Lanka by 51 runs in a dramatic Super Eights encounter at the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 on Sunday (February 22).

After being restricted to 146 for nine by a disciplined Sri Lankan attack, England's pace-spin combination of Jofra Archer and Will Jacks turned the contest decisively in the powerplay, leaving the hosts reeling at 34 for five. Sri Lanka were eventually bowled out for 95 in 16.4 overs, handing England a commanding victory.

Salt Stands Tall Amid Batting Wobble

England's innings was anchored by Phil Salt, who struck a fluent 62 off 40 balls. On a surface offering assistance to bowlers, Salt's knock proved invaluable as wickets fell around him.

Sri Lanka's left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage was outstanding, returning figures of 3 for 26. He removed Jos Buttler (7) and captain Harry Brook (14) to reduce England to 68 for four at the halfway stage. Maheesh Theekshana and Dilshan Madushanka also chipped in with crucial breakthroughs as England struggled for momentum.

Salt, however, counterattacked with crisp strokeplay, bringing up his half-century in 36 balls with authoritative hits over extra cover and fine leg. His dismissal, attempting to clear long-off, triggered a late collapse as England limped to 146 for nine.

Archer and Jacks Rip Through the Top Order

If England's batting effort appeared modest, their bowling unit made it look more than enough. Archer struck early to remove Pathum Nissanka, cleverly luring him into a trap with Jamie Overton stationed at deep mid-wicket. Jacks then swung the match England's way with two wickets in two balls, dismissing Kusal Mendis and Pavan Rathnayake in quick succession.

Archer added another scalp as Sri Lanka's top order disintegrated under sustained pressure. Jacks finished with impressive figures of 3 for 22, while Archer returned 2 for 20. Liam Dawson (2/27) and Adil Rashid (2/13) ensured there was no lower-order resistance.

Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka top-scored with 30 off 24 balls, but the chase never truly gathered momentum after the early collapse.

England Find Super Eights Rhythm

The result marked a stark contrast to England's scratchy group-stage batting performances. While concerns remain around Buttler's form against spin, the bowling attack's ability to dominate the powerplay provided the blueprint England had sought heading into the Super Eights.

For Sri Lanka, the defeat is a setback in their campaign, especially after having the visitors under pressure in the first innings. But England's ruthless exploitation of early breakthroughs ensured the match slipped away swiftly in front of a stunned Pallekele crowd.

With the Super Eights intensifying, England's balanced attack and Salt's timely form could prove decisive in their pursuit of another T20 World Cup title.
