T20 World Cup 2026: Matheesha Pathirana Ruled Out, Dilshan Madushanka Named Replacement for Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's injury troubles at the T20 World Cup 2026 have deepened, with pace spearhead Matheesha Pathirana ruled out of the remainder of the tournament. Left-arm seamer Dilshan Madushanka has been approved as his replacement by the ICC Event Technical Committee.

In an official statement released on Wednesday (February 18), the ICC confirmed: "The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 has approved Dilshan Madushanka as a replacement for Matheesha Pathirana in the Sri Lanka squad."

T20 World Cup 2026 Matheesha Pathirana Ruled Out Dilshan Madushanka Named Replacement for Sri Lanka

Muscle Strain Ends Pathirana's Campaign

Pathirana suffered a muscle strain in his left leg during Sri Lanka's Group B clash against Australia in Pallekele on February 16. The tearaway pacer pulled up just four deliveries into his opening over, clutching his leg before limping off the field. Although Sri Lanka went on to secure an impressive eight-wicket victory, Pathirana did not return to the match.

Subsequent medical assessment confirmed the muscle strain, ruling him out of the tournament with immediate effect. As per tournament regulations, any squad replacement requires formal approval from the ICC's Event Technical Committee before being officially ratified.

The committee comprises Wasim Khan (Chair, ICC General Manager - Cricket), Gaurav Saxena (ICC General Manager - Events & Corporate Communications, IBC representative), Hemang Amin (Tournament Director, host representative) and Shaun Pollock (Independent nominee).

Second Major Blow for Sri Lanka

Pathirana's exit marks the second significant injury setback for Sri Lanka in this World Cup. Earlier, star all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga was ruled out after suffering a hamstring injury during the tournament opener against Ireland.

The twin absences leave Sri Lanka without two of their most dynamic bowling options heading into the crucial Super Eights phase.

Madushanka's Opportunity

Madushanka, who last featured in the ODI series against Zimbabwe in August 2025, returns to the national setup after overcoming his own injury concerns. He recently participated in a T20 World Cup warm-up fixture for Sri Lanka A against Oman, though he went wicketless in his three overs.

The left-arm pacer has represented Sri Lanka in 15 T20 Internationals, claiming 15 wickets at an economy rate of 9.75. His most notable performance at the global stage came during the 2023 ODI World Cup, where he finished as Sri Lanka's leading wicket-taker with 21 wickets at an average of 25.00.

With Sri Lanka set to face Zimbabwe in their final Group B match in Colombo before opening their Super Eights campaign against England in Pallekele on February 22, Madushanka's inclusion could prove pivotal as the team seeks to maintain balance despite mounting injury concerns.
