Team India suffered a crushing 76-run defeat against South Africa in the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2026. The heavy loss left many fans and experts disappointed.
Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was quick to share his thoughts on his YouTube channel, pointing out that team management made two major errors - dropping Axar Patel and sending Rinku Singh too low in the batting order which cost India the game.

The first big mistake, according to Ashwin, was leaving out star all-rounder Axar Patel. The team chose to play Washington Sundar instead, aiming for better bowler-batter "match-ups." Ashwin explained that while this strategy works in long tournaments like the IPL, a World Cup requires a stable team.
"I agree that the IPL is good for match-ups, but you have to change the team because you are going to play 14 games. But in such ICC campaigns, the more stable you can keep the team, the better. I agree 100% that you have to use Washington Sundar against left-handers; you have to play him, I agree with all that. But Axar Patel has been your MVP in T20 cricket. Let's not forget what Axar Patel has done,"
He also mentioned the 2024 T20 World Cup final against South Africa where Axar Patel built an important 72-run partnership with Virat Kohli to help India set a winning score of 176.
"In the previous World Cup, in the situation against South Africa, in which India was in the chase, Axar Patel came in under the same circumstances. He stitched a partnership with Virat Kohli, and India crossed 170. Of course, Kohli's experience was there, but Axar is not inferior. If India had a few wickets in hand and stability in the middle overs, they would have chased the target down," he added.
The second blunder Ashwin highlighted was India's batting order. Rinku Singh, known for his explosive finishing skills, was sent out to bat at number 8. To make room for the left-right combinations, Washington Sundar was promoted to number 5. Ashwin felt that a talented player like Rinku deserves a much better position to make an impact.
"Rinku Singh batting at No. 8. You have eight batters, and Rinku is batting at No. 8, he cannot be sent in to bat at such a position. No disrespect to Washington Sundar. He is a fabulous batter. We know his batting skills. It was a lesson South Africa taught India, 'please don't come to games underprepared,'" Ashwin added.
Ultimately, Ashwin felt that the team confused themselves with too many tactical changes instead of trusting their best players in crucial roles. India will now have to regroup quickly if they want to keep their semi-final hopes alive in the tournament.
