IND vs NZ T20 World Cup Final: Mitchell Santner tells Kiwi Fans New Zealand ‘Outnumbered’ in Ahmedabad, Fans Warn India Against Complacency

Ahead of the T20 World Cup final at Motera’s Narendra Modi Stadium, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner posted a message to Kiwi fans, noting his side will be outnumbered by Indian support. He urged supporters back home to stay behind New Zealand as they prepare to face an India team in strong form.

India vs New Zealand: Motera is filling again with Indian jerseys and tricolours for the T20 World Cup final at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner accepted the imbalance in support before facing India. Santner posted a message to fans on X as crowds built up for Sunday (March 8) night’s summit clash.

Santner wrote: "I am not one for big speeches or rallying cries... but its fair to say we are a bit outnumbered over here -- 1.4 billion Team India fas and all that... But it's all good because we know back home you will have our backs." The note framed New Zealand as visitors in a loud Indian setting.

T20 World Cup final build-up at Narendra Modi Stadium

The match begins at 7 pm, shaping a calmer build-up outside the ground. Fans started arriving late in the afternoon, not early morning. The mood felt more festive than tense for many in Ahmedabad. The stadium area still swelled steadily as kick-off approached.

The feel around Motera contrasts with November 19, 2023, when India faced Australia in a World Cup final here. That day had a 1 pm start, and the city stirred from about 8 am. Many fans carried nerves through the morning. The atmosphere brimming with confidence, one might even say a bit overconfident for India had beaten Aussies in the group stage in Chennai.

But once India posted a below-par 240 on the board after being invited to bat first by Pat Cummins. The mood inside the turned sombre after Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne started building the partnership. The sea of blue that had descended upon the stadium started exiting the venue with hung heads, way before the match concluded.

However, supporters this time appeared more confident, with many expecting an Indian win. Some even spoke as if the result was already decided. The belief linked to India’s grit and consistency in the tournament.

But there were also those, who witnessed the humiliation on that fateful evening on November 19 in 2023 against Australia, who cautioned Suryakumar Yadav and his band to not take the Kiwis lightly.

Fans Warn India Against Complacency

Despite India entering the final as favourites after a dominant run through the tournament, several fans have cautioned the team against complacency.

New Zealand's disciplined bowling attack, led by Santner and supported by the likes of Rachin Ravindra and Matt Henry, has been one of the most effective units in the competition.

The Kiwis also boast explosive batting options such as Finn Allen and Tim Seifert, who have dismantled bowling attacks throughout the tournament.

Many supporters believe that while home advantage could play a role, India will need to maintain their intensity to overcome a side known for punching above its weight in global tournaments.

Fans reminded Team India to take lessons from the defeat in 2019 ODI WC semi-final and 2021 World Test Championship Final in England against the Kiwis; and the Indians' poor track record record in this tournament against the Blackcaps. "New Zealand are known for playing a positive brand of cricket and can't be taken lighly. Not to forget, we are yet to beat them in the T20 WC," said Mohit, a software professional from Noida.

While others were quick to quip that the Men in Blue prevailed over the familiar foes in Dubai last year in Champions Trophy 2025 Final under Rohit Sharma's captaincy. "Many of these players were part of that Champions Trophy 2025 squad, they know what it takes to win," claimed another spectator.

Fans and travel disruption for T20 World Cup final in Ahmedabad

Among those walking into the stadium were a couple of tech professionals working at a Bengaluru-based software MNC. They paid premium rates for match tickets and hotel rooms. One of them said, "Its a once-in-a-lifetime experience," while dismissing the high cost.

Not all planned visitors reached Ahmedabad for the final. Dubai airspace was temporarily shut due to the war against Iran. The disruption affected travel plans for many NRIs. Organisers and fans expected a bigger overseas Indian presence before the flight changes.

Mitchell Santner message to New Zealand fans for T20 World Cup final

New Zealand supporters were expected to be scarce inside the ground. Few black shirts were likely to be visible among the Indian colours. Many Kiwi fans were set to watch on television instead. The match was due to start at 2.30 am Monday New Zealand time.

Santner wrote: "Kia Ora Aotearoa," and used a traditional Maori greeting that means Hello New Zealand. Santner added: "We get it. The match starts super early Monday morning. But set your alarm and get around us one more time. And if you are a bit late to school, pass on my message to your boss or teachers".

Santner ended the post by hoping New Zealand return home with extra luggage. Aotearoa in Maori means the land of the long white clouds. India, meanwhile, were set to chase a title at Motera under lights. The final awaited in a stadium dominated by Indian support.
