2nd India-England Test: 'Tactically Virat Kohli is pretty naive'

Visakhapatnam, Nov 22: Virat Kohli might have come in for high praise for his batting in the victorious 2nd Test against England but his captaincy has been described as "pretty naive" by a former skipper.

India thrashed England by 246 runs yesterday (November 21) to take a 1-0 lead in the five-Test rubber. However, England's Nasser Hussain was unimpressed with Kohli's leadership skills on the 4th day of the match. (Kohli's career-high Test rank)

Having set England a target of 405, England defended stoutly to end the 4th day at 87/2 in 59.2 overs. Skipper Alastair Cook fell on the last ball of the day for 54.

India came back strongly on the 5th and final day to take the remaining 8 wickets. The visitors crumbled to 158 all out in 97.3 overs.

"You can lead by example, as Kohli does with the bat, you can show a lot of passion which Kohli does in abundance. But tactically I think he is pretty naive," Hussain told "The Verdict" on "Sky Sports".

The 48-year-old India-born Hussain, who played 96 Tests for England, was part of the TV commentary panel for the 2nd Test.

The 28-year-old Kohli scored 167 and 81 in the Test, leading from the front. When other batsmen struggled, the Delhi right-hander was at ease. He won the Man-of-the-match award.

However, Nussain said Kohli was "better" on the 5th day of the Test. "He's been better today. He hasn't been as noticeable; sometimes he interferes a bit too much but what he did today was not move the field as much and not tinker as much. But that doesn't take away from the fact that he was poor yesterday," he said.
