New Delhi, Aug 14: A 1-0 series win against England has put India at third place behind Australia and England in the latest ICC Test Championship ranking table released today.
India with a total 107 points is just four points behind England and though India has the same number of points as Sri Lanka, it stands above the Lankans when the ratings were recalculated to three decimal places. On the other hand, Australia continues its dominance with a total 141 points. South Africa is at the fifth position with a total 102 points.
The consolation for the England team is the fact that things could have been worse. In case India would have won the final Test at Oval securing 2-0 win, it would have made England's total to 107 tied with Team India and only decimal places would have given Michael Vaughan's team a second place.
India's series win, secured by virtue of a drawn first Test at Lord's and victory in the second match at Trent Bridge by seven wickets, is its first in England since its 2-0 success in the three-match clash of 1986. India's only other success in England was the 1-0 win in 1971.
