Team India Victory Parade: This Joyride Will Continue in Indian Cricket For Some Time

By Indranil Basu

They have won so many matches for India in the past. But winning the hearts of millions by claiming the T20 World Cup and seeing the reaction with their own eyes is a different feeling. The feeling was surreal after India won the T20 title for the second time in Barbados on Saturday.

After those initial celebrations inside the stadium and hotel, there was not much to do for the Men in Blue, as they were stranded in the West Indies for nearly four days. They could just draw the curtains to see a few people roaming outside their room or some powerful winds lashing the shores of Barbados.

It, however, proved like a lull before a storm. But the moment the team landed after a 16-hour long flight, wherein most of the cricketers spent time sleeping and keeping low in anticipation of a wild celebration in India, it was like opening a pandora's box.

From the time he stepped into the Indian shores, it was celebration, celebration and only celebration. Good wishes poured in like cats and dogs while the players had to keep their happy faces intact. They didn't have to prevent it. It all happened naturally because the T20 World Cup was home.

Some could have accused this celebration of something that went overboard. But the euphoria of the victory was such that India couldn't have stayed at home and done nothing about it.

Those who could come out and have a glimpse of their pin-up stars didn't waste time sitting at home. They just walked out and saw what was simply unbelievable.

Even Rohit Sharmas and Rahul Dravids were mesmerized by so many people coming out of their comfort zones to say "Thank You" to their stars. It was bigger than any congregation that ever happened in the streets of Mumbai.

Delhi, where the team landed first to meet PM Modi, was just a dress rehearsal. Mumbai was like the final destination. Mumbai was like the T20 World Cup final, where India beat South Africa by 7 runs.

If 'the 2007 Victory Parade' after the inaugural T20 World Cup was big, this Victory March was even bigger? Comparing both would be a tough job in itself but the way BCCI planned the entire day was really meticulous. Right from the start at the Delhi Airport to the finish at the Wankhede Stadium, everything was appropriately planned and executed just like the way the Indian team did in the West Indies.

In between, there was dancing, music, delicious food, hugging, getting gifts on a victory lap, and signing jerseys to tennis balls for the crowd that gathered inside the Wankhede, but the best of the lot was the fans at the Marine Drive, where no one was exactly driving.

They were all on foot, following the team while two rows of people watched the big stars waving into them from the open double-decker bus. It was like telling all those fans out there that this joyride will continue in Indian cricket for some time.
