The Story of Juned Khan: From Autorickshaw Driver to Mumbai Rising Pacer, This Coach Helped Him

By MyKhel Staff

Mumbai's latest pace sensation, Mohammad Juned Khan, made an unforgettable debut for the 42-time Ranji Trophy champions in the Irani Cup 2024. However, his journey from the bustling streets of Mumbai, where he once drove an autorickshaw to make ends meet, to earning a place in the Mumbai cricket team, is one of resilience, determination, and pure passion for the game.

Born in Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh, just 120 km from the venue where he debuted, Juned's story took an extraordinary turn at a young age. At 14, he left his hometown and relocated to Mumbai, not with dreams of cricket stardom but to support his family.

Working initially in a jeans factory and later driving an autorickshaw from 2015 to 2018, cricket was far from his reality until a chance encounter with the Sanjeevani Cricket Academy in Bandra East altered his trajectory.

"I didn't have money to buy spikes, but many people helped me out and they backed me to keep playing regularly," Juned reflected. It was here that he met Abhishek Nayar, former assistant coach of Kolkata Knight Riders.

Nayar, also the current Indian team assistant coach, saw potential in the young fast bowler. "Had it not been for him, I would have been nowhere near where I am now. He was the one who told me to stop driving the autorickshaw and focus on cricket full-time," Juned acknowledged.

Under Nayar's mentorship, Juned became a net bowler for KKR in the 2024 Indian Premier League and gained invaluable experience. He went on to play in Karnataka's premier domestic tournaments, including the Buchi Babu and KSCA events, further honing his skills.

Juned's debut for Mumbai was marked by a significant wicket - that of Rest of India skipper and Indian international, Ruturaj Gaikwad. "That was an amazing start for me," Juned shared after Mumbai lifted the Irani Cup for the first time in 27 years. His dream now?

To leave a mark in the upcoming Ranji Trophy by increasing his pace to 140-145 kmph, just like his idol, Mohammed Shami. From an autorickshaw driver to Mumbai's rising star, Juned Khan's story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the belief that dreams, no matter how distant, can be realized with the right guidance and grit.
