'There is a dearth of talent in that country': Sourav Ganguly gives brutal opinion on current Pakistan generation

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has given his brutal opinion on the current Pakistan cricket team.

Pakistan cricket is facing a challenging phase with a string of disappointing performances, the most recent a Test series loss against Bangladesh at home.

Following the series loss to Bangladesh that dropped Pakistan to eighth in the ICC Test rankings, former India captain Sourav Ganguly has expressed concerns about the state of cricket in Pakistan, highlighting a significant decline in the quality of players.

Pakistan's struggles have been evident on multiple fronts. They endured an early exit in the 2023 ODI World Cup, a group-stage exit after losing to UAE in the 2024 T20 World Cup, and a recent Test series loss to Bangladesh. As Pakistan's cricketers prepare for the domestic 50-over Champions Cup, Ganguly's remarks have brought attention to what he believes is a "genuine dearth of talent in the country."

Speaking at a promotional event in Kolkata, Ganguly recalled the glory days of Pakistan cricket.

"Every time we think of Pakistan, we remember Miandad, Wasim, Waqar, Saeed Anwar, Mohammad Yousuf, and Younis Khan,” Ganguly said.

However, he emphasized that nostalgia alone cannot win matches in modern cricket and gave his honest opinion on the current crop of players.

“Every generation has to produce outstanding players to win, and when I look at Pakistan in world cricket - I saw them in the West Indies World Cup, in India during the World Cup, and now after the Bangladesh series loss. There is a dearth of talent in that country.” Ganguly said, noting that the current squad lacks the world-class players that once defined Pakistan cricket.

Ganguly was clear in stating that his comments were not meant to disrespect current players but reflected his observations of Pakistan’s recent performances.

"The people connected with the sport in Pakistan will have to look into it. I'm not saying this with disrespect. Pakistan of the old had some great cricketers, which I don't see in this squad," he added.

Ganguly’s comments underscore the need for introspection within Pakistan cricket. The once formidable team known for producing legendary cricketers seems to be struggling to find the next generation of stars. Along with the turmoil within PCB and the surrounding controversies, it is high time for Pakistan to string an upsurge in the coming months.
