They Should Play Golf More! Kapil Dev Reacts To Rohit Sharma-Virat Kohli's Performances In IND vs SA ODIs

India's recently concluded ODI series against South Africa showcased two familiar pillars of consistency-Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The senior duo, who now exclusively feature in the 50-over format, played central roles in India's 2-1 triumph, reminding fans that even in the latter stages of their careers, their class remains undeniable.

Virat Kohli was unquestionably the standout of the series. The former captain amassed 302 runs across three matches, smashing back-to-back centuries and finishing with an unbeaten 65 in the decisive third ODI.

His remarkable form not only earned him the Player of the Series award but also pushed him up the ICC ODI batting rankings, where he now sits just behind Rohit Sharma at No. 2. Kohli's calmness in run-chases, combined with his ability to dominate spin and pace alike, proved crucial in India's success, especially during the chase in Visakhapatnam where he anchored the innings flawlessly.

Rohit Sharma, meanwhile, played the role of the steadying force at the top. With 146 runs, including two composed half-centuries, the ex skipper offered both solidity and aggression when needed. His fluent 75-run knock in the series decider set the foundation for India's comfortable nine-wicket win. Rohit's performance ensured he maintained his position at the top of the ICC ODI batting chart, keeping the Ro-Ko pair firmly at the summit of world cricket.

Despite their strong on-field display, both players face constant questions about the future, especially as they have stepped away from T20Is and Tests. At the launch of The 72, The League, a PGTI golf event in Delhi, Kapil Dev was asked about their performances and longevity. Responding with humour, the legendary all-rounder said, "Good luck to them, they should play for golf."

The comment, delivered in Kapil Dev's trademark light-hearted tone, hinted at a possible post-retirement passion for the duo. Golf has already attracted several Indian cricket greats-Yuvraj Singh is a regular on the course, and Sachin Tendulkar too has embraced the sport. With Kohli and Rohit nearing the twilight of their careers, Dev's remark playfully suggested that the greens might welcome two more icons in the years ahead.

For now, though, Indian fans will savour the fact that both continue to deliver vintage performances in the ODI arena.
