Smith the top dog again, Moeen misery continues - Perth player ratings

We rate each member of the starting XIs in the third Ashes Test, with Australia captain Steve Smith topping the scoresheet once again.

Perth, Dec 18: Australia made it three wins from as many matches in the Ashes and regained the urn with an innings-and-41-run victory over England in Perth on Monday.

Omnisport's Dejan Kalinic and Christopher Devine take a look at how the players from both sides fared at the WACA.

AUSTRALIA

Cameron Bancroft - 4

Only had one opportunity to shine with the bat, making 25 on his home ground. Still has improvement in him, but his spot is safe.

David Warner - 4

Australia have won the Ashes even without Warner starring. The left-hander looked set for a big innings before pushing at a Craig Overton delivery to be out for 22.

Usman Khawaja - 6

Under pressure, Khawaja scored his second half-century of the series. There is more to come from the left-hander.

Steve Smith - 10

Exceptional. Smith starred again, making a career-best 239 to set up Australia's win. The captain came to the crease with his team 55-2 and, when he fell, they were 560-6. He also ended up timing his declaration to perfection.

Shaun Marsh - 4.5

Promoted up the order after his brother Mitchell was added to the XI, Shaun Marsh only made 28, although he did play a role supporting Smith.

Mitchell Marsh - 8.5

Always a talked-about selection, Mitchell Marsh delivered in a big way. He produced a brilliant 181 with the bat, combining with Smith for a decisive 301-run partnership. Marsh struggled with the ball - returning match figures of 0-57 from 12 overs - but showed he may yet be capable of playing as a specialist batsman.

Tim Paine - 8

Along with an unbeaten 49 in the first innings, Paine was again impressive behind the stumps, a few leaping takes the highlight. He continues to justify his surprise call-up.

Mitchell Starc - 7.5

It still feels like Starc is yet to find his best form but he nevertheless claimed five more wickets, including an unplayable delivery to remove James Vince in the second innings, to take his tally in the series to 19. A bruised heel could see the left-armer rested in Melbourne.

Pat Cummins - 7

Cummins continues to impress, not only with the ball but with the bat. The paceman made 41 in addition to claiming two scalps in each England innings.

Josh Hazlewood - 8

Hazlewood had enjoyed a fine series without much reward but that changed in Perth. After returning 3-92 in England's first dig, he picked up 5-48 in the second and led Australia's charge to victory.

Nathan Lyon - 6.5

Lyon had to settle for a less influential role at the WACA. There was little turn on offer, but the spinner still managed to remove Dawid Malan to break England's key partnership in the first innings before taking the big wicket of Joe Root in the second.

ENGLAND

Alastair Cook - 2

Cook spoke of the hard work he had been putting in ahead of the Test, but scores of seven and 14 have done nothing to ease the mounting pressure on his shoulders. The former skipper was undone by full deliveries in both innings and looks woefully short of form.

Mark Stoneman - 6

For the third Test running, Stoneman showed encouraging signs without making a substantial score. His first-innings fifty in Perth was an assured effort against a hostile pace attack but he failed at the second time of asking.

James Vince - 7

Vince was once again caught behind the wicket on Thursday after reaching 25. Yet England's number three was much more impressive when making 55 in the second innings and could do absolutely nothing about the remarkable Starc delivery that moved sideways off a crack to bowl him.

Joe Root - 3

Nothing is going right for England's captain, who suffered two hugely frustrating cheap dismissals at the WACA and appeared powerless to prevent Australia piling on the runs.

Dawid Malan - 9.5

An ultimately miserable Test for England will forever be one to remember for Malan after the left-hander answered critics of his selection with a magnificent 140. The Middlesex batsman also top-scored time around with 54 and could have done little more to aid his team's cause.

Jonny Bairstow - 8.5

Bairstow also reached three figures in the first innings, sharing 237 with Malan before England's first innings went pear-shaped. The wicketkeeper was one of many to fail in the second knock.

Moeen Ali - 1

Ineffective with the ball and barely contributed with the bat. Moeen came into this series as a key member of England's side but could now be facing a battle to retain his place.

Craig Overton - 5.5

Overton removed both Australia openers and showed commendable courage in the latter stages of the game after suffering a cracked rib that threatens his participation in the rest of the series.

Chris Woakes - 3.5

Struggled to make an impression once again and ends the third Test averaging 15 with the bat and 52 with the ball - figures he would wish were reversed.

Stuart Broad - 2

Perhaps hampered by injury, Broad was well below his brilliant best as he returned dismal figures of 0-142 from 35 overs. The previously unthinkable prospect of the 31-year-old losing his place on this tour now appears realistic.

James Anderson - 7

The only England bowler to gain any real rewards, Anderson claimed four wickets and once more suffered for a lack of support.
