'Bloke has been knighted': Fans divided on Alastair Cook's reaction in commentary box post England's defeat

Former England captain Alastair Cook's reaction in the commentary as England faced a heartbreaking two-wicket defeat in the Ashes 2023 first Test against Australia at Edgbaston has divided the opinions of the fans.

With Australia eight down for 227 while chasing a 281-run target, Pat Cummins showed nerves of steel and scored 44 unbeaten runs to take his team to a famous victory in Birmingham. On the other end was Nathan Lyon, who scored 16 off 28 and partnered with his captain for 55 unbeaten runs for the ninth wicket.

As Cummins opened the face of the bat and the ball touched the third man boundary, former England captain Cook could hardly utter a word and had his head in hands, utterly devastated by the heartbreaking defeat.

As his fellow commentator continued in an electric fashion to describe Australia's win for the ages, Cook continued to shake his head in disappointment.

The same has irked Australian fans who have slammed the knighted cricketer for 'sulking' and going mum after England's defeat. However, quite a many fans came in support for one of England's most successful and longest-serving Test captains.

The southpaw, who still plays county cricket for Essex and slammed a hundred for them earlier this month, is not a very experienced broadcaster and the norm in the commentary box is such that a senior or someone from the winning country takes over the mike to narrate the result of the match. The likes of Ravi Shastri and Harsha Bhogle have explained the same in the past.

Regardless, fans are an emotional being and the Ashes rivalry is big enough that one can be slammed and misunderstood for no reason. Here's how fans have reacted.
