This RCB Batter Fires Blistering 159 in Ranji Trophy, Sends Strong Message Ahead of IPL Retention 2025

By Rasmi Biswas

Rajat Patidar staged a sensational comeback for Madhya Pradesh in their Ranji Trophy clash against Haryana, amassing an unbeaten 159 runs from just 102 balls at a strike rate of 155.88. The right-handed batter's explosive innings included 13 fours and seven sixes.

It turned the tide for MP on the final day of the match at Holkar Stadium in Indore. Patidar's century came in just 68 balls, making it the fifth-fastest in Ranji Trophy history and the quickest by any Madhya Pradesh player, surpassing Naman Ojha's 69-ball record.

Madhya Pradesh, who trailed by 132 runs after Haryana's first innings total of 440, relied on Patidar's aggressive knock to set up a challenging target of 177 for Haryana in just two sessions. Despite Patidar's efforts, the game ended in a draw as Haryana played out 115/3, avoiding the chase.

The timing of Patidar's knock could not have been better with the IPL retention 2025 deadline looming on October 31. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Patidar's IPL franchise, has yet to finalize its player retention, and Patidar's performance will surely influence their decision.

Currently, RCB has only confirmed the retention of their star batter and former captain, Virat Kohli. The future of other key players, including captain Faf du Plessis, remains uncertain as teams are allowed to retain a maximum of six players using a mix of direct retention and Right to Match (RTM) options.

Patidar's recent Ranji performance is a bold reminder of his capabilities. He had a modest start to his domestic season, with only 146 runs in the Duleep Trophy and a score of 90 in the Ranji Trophy match against Punjab.

Now, his latest 159-run knock certainly reflects his ability to deliver under pressure. This inning may play a decisive role in securing him a spot in RCB's roster, especially with his demonstrated potential to turn games around in a short time.

With the IPL mega auction approaching and a purse increase to INR 120 crore, RCB will be assessing Patidar's value alongside other domestic and international stars. His blistering century reinforces his status as one of India's rising talents, poised for a significant role in the upcoming IPL season if retained by RCB.
