Bengaluru, November 29: Thisara Perera on Wednesday (November 29), was appointed as Sri Lanka's one-day and T20I captain.

Perera will take over from Upul Tharanga and his first assignment will be the series against India. India will be led by Rohit Sharma in the absence of Virat Kohli, who has been rested from the ODIs.

The 28-year-old Perera has played 125 ODIs scoring 1441 runs, 63 T20I and six Tests. In ODIs he has taken 133 wickets with his right-arm medium pace.

Tharanga has been sacked after a vastly unsuccessful stint as ODI captain. Dinesh Chandimal is Lanka's Test skipper.

Tharanga took over as ODI captain after Angelo Mathews stepped down following an early exit from the ICC Champions Trophy in England.

However, Tharanga's stint started with a shocking defeat to Zimbabwe and later Lanka suffered two whitewash against India at home and Pakistan in UAE.

Meanwhile, Tharanga had also earned three suspensions for slow over rate.
