Three Key Players Who Missed Out on India's Women's T20 World Cup 2024 Squad

By Rishab VM

As India gears up for the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024, the 15-member squad has been named. While the team boasts some of the finest talents in women's cricket, a few seasoned players who were part of last year's tournament have surprisingly missed out.

The squad includes a blend of experience and youth, with an emphasis on spin, considering the conditions in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). However, this shift in strategy has left some notable names like Rajeshwari Gaekwad, Harleen Deol, and Shikha Pandey on the sidelines.

India s Women s T20 World Cup 2024

Here's a closer look at these three players who didn't make the cut for this year's World Cup.

1. Rajeshwari Gaekwad

Rajeshwari Gaekwad, one of India's most experienced spinners, was a surprising omission from the squad. Gaekwad, who has played 58 T20Is and taken 61 wickets for India, had a rather underwhelming performance in the previous Women's T20 World Cup, where she failed to pick up any wickets in the four matches she played. Despite her vast experience, her recent form has been inconsistent. In the 2024 Women's Premier League (WPL), Gaekwad managed to take only six wickets in eight games, which may have influenced the selectors' decision to leave her out of the World Cup squad.

The conditions in the UAE are expected to favor spinners, and while Gaekwad has the skill set suited for such conditions, her recent struggles with form may have worked against her. The team management opted for other spin options who have shown more consistency and effectiveness in recent outings.

2. Harleen Deol

Gujarat Giants batter Harleen Deol is another player who didn't make it to the T20 World Cup squad. Deol, who has shown promise in the past, had a challenging 2024 season. Unfortunately, her campaign in the Women's Premier League was cut short due to an injury she sustained early in the tournament. Before her injury, Deol struggled to make a significant impact with the bat. In the Giants' season opener, she was dismissed for just 8 runs while batting at No. 3. In her second game, she was promoted to open the innings but could only muster 22 runs off 31 balls. Back at No. 3 for the next match, Deol managed 18 off 24 balls.
These performances, combined with her injury, likely played a role in the selectors' decision to exclude her from the World Cup squad.

3. Shikha Pandey

Shikha Pandey, a seasoned fast bowler, also finds herself missing from the World Cup squad this year. Pandey had turned out for the Trinbago Knight Riders in the ongoing Women's Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) to stake her claim for a spot in the national team. However, her efforts weren't enough to secure her place, as the Indian team management decided to prioritize an extra spinner in the squad, anticipating spin-friendly conditions in the UAE.

Pandey's performance in the last edition of the Women's T20 World Cup might have also contributed to her exclusion. She picked up only three wickets in three matches during the tournament, which fell short of expectations. Her recent form, combined with the team's strategic focus on spin, could have led to her omission despite her extensive experience and capabilities.
