Three stats of MS Dhoni which Rohit Sharma can surpass with ease in international cricket

MS Dhoni has been one of the vital cogs of Indian cricket history. The senior pro who plays for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, is known for his calm demeanour, cricketing brain, street-smart wicketkeeping skills and match-winning abilities. Notably, he was the best finisher during the heydays of his cricketing career.

As a captain, he helped Team India scale great heights, leading the team to numerous wins, including prestigious ICC titles (T20 World Cup 2007, ODI World Cup 2011, Champions Trophy 2013). As a player, he often served as the backbone of the batting lineup, where he perfected the art of crucial finishing roles.

Rohit Sharma

MS Dhoni mustered 17,266 runs in international cricket. He announced his retirement from the international circuit in late August 15, 2020. Cut to the chase, as Indian captain Rohit Sharma continues to shine in international cricket, he has the potential to break some of MS Dhoni's stats. Let's take a closer look at three stats that Rohit could shatter in the times to come.

1. MS Dhoni's runs in Tests

The Ranchi-born didn't quite deliver the goods in the purest format of the game. Let's be honest that playing Tests was not his strong suit. Despite all that, he still showcased his resilience at times and accumulated 4876 runs in Tests. On the contrary, Rohit Sharma, who has scored 4137 runs in 59 Tests has the penchant for scoring big hundreds and the Nagpur-born could easily add more runs to surpass MS Dhoni's Test run tally.

2. MS Dhoni's runs in ODIs

As far as the 50-over format is concerned, MS Dhoni amassed 10,773 runs to his name. On the other hand, captain Rohit Sharma, who is steadily climbing the ranks is just 65 runs away from etching his name into the record books. With a few years of cricket still ahead of him and his capability to score double centuries in ODIs, he is not well-positioned to surpass MS Dhoni's ODI run tally but also create more records.

3. MS Dhoni's fours in Tests

MS Dhoni's batting approach is more suited to limited-overs formats but he often played aggressively, which sometimes led to his dismissals in Tests. However, his aggressive yet calculated approach in the longest format saw him hit 544 fours. On the contrary, Rohit Sharma, who is best known for his elegant stroke play and ability to find the gaps, can easily break this record. As of now, Rohit Sharma has hit 452 fours and considering his knack for converting starts into big scores, he has the opportunity to hit even more fours and surpass MS Dhoni's stat.
