Abu Dhabi, Nov 29: The 2023 edition of the Abu Dhabi T10 tournament commenced with a bang! The opening match delivered a thrilling spectacle as Deccan Gladiators secured a decisive victory over New York Strikers on Tuesday (November 28).

The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the outstanding performance by Tom Kohler-Cadmore, who powered the Gladiators to their first victory of the season with a blistering 68 runs off 33 balls.

The Gladiators Set the Pace

The overall atmosphere at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium was electric as the Gladiators took to the field to bat. The pitch was nicely grassed, and with the cool Abu Dhabi breeze setting in, the conditions were perfect for a game of cricket.

As the tournament was officially inaugurated by Shaji Ul Mulk, Chairman of T10 Sports Management, the Strikers, under the leadership of Pollard, decided to bowl first.

With Mohammad Amir leading the Strikers' attack, the Gladiators' openers Nicholas Pooran and Kohler-Cadmore were initially put on the back foot. Pooran's early dismissal by Muhammad Jawadullah added to the Gladiators' woes. The pressure began to mount, culminating in a mix-up that saw Andre Fletcher run out.

Kohler-Cadmore Steals the Show

Despite the early setbacks, the Gladiators found a hero in Andre Russell who started to counterattack with some inventive strokes. However, his attempted big hit off Ali Khan's delivery ended up in Pollard's safe hands.

Undeterred, Kohler-Cadmore seized the initiative, hitting Sunil Narine for two sixes in the following over. Even as Chamika Karunaratne dealt a double blow to the Gladiators, Kohler-Cadmore stood firm, delivering a dazzling 27-ball fifty. His remarkable innings set a daunting total of 118/8 for the Strikers to chase.

Gladiators Defend Their Total

The Strikers' chase began on a sour note with Trent Boult dismissing the dangerous Rahmanullah Gurbaz. Kusal Perera tried to fight back, but Zahoor Khan picked his wicket to give the Gladiators firm control of the match. The momentum seemed to sway in the Strikers favour for a moment as the Gladiators dropped three catches. However, things soon started to go downhill for the Strikers.

Impact Player Rule in Play

As per the Impact Player rule, Kohler-Cadmore was replaced in the field by substitute Nuwan Thushara. Despite being hit for a few boundaries by Muhammad Waseem, Thushara managed to hold his own. Waseem's fierce innings was halted by Luke Wood, with Imad Wasim making a crucial catch.

With the task of a steep run-chase ahead, Kieron Pollard and Asif Ali were dismissed in quick succession. The Gladiators emerged victorious by 22 runs, marking a promising start to their title defence.

The opening match of the 2023 Abu Dhabi T10 tournament, thus, proved to be an exciting roller-coaster ride, the only certainty in the shortest format of the game. The Deccan Gladiators, buoyed by a stellar performance by Tom Kohler-Cadmore, triumphed over the New York Strikers.

The thrilling opening encounter between Deccan Gladiators and New York Strikers set the pace for what promises to be a tournament filled with high-octane cricketing action and entertainment in Abu Dhabi.
