ICC World Cup 2023 had its strange moment of controversy on Monday (November 6) when Angelo Mathews was timed out in international cricket's first incident during the Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
While the incident left the cricketing world in a split, with the majority showing displeasure towards Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan on remaining insistent on appealing for the dismissal, we take a look at other such recorded time-out dismissals in cricket.

Interestingly, time-out dismissals previously took place in first-class cricket six times including an incident in Indian first-class cricket as well.
| Player | Match | Reason |
| Andrew Jordaan (South Africa) | Eastern Province vs Transvaal in Port Elizabeth (1987-88) | Jordaan couldn't resume innings after remaining not out overnight as he couldn't reach the ground due to flooded roads |
| Hemulal Yadav (India) | Tripura vs Orissa in Cuttack (1997-98) | Yadav didn't reach the crease on time as he was busy talking to his team manager on the bounday |
| Vasbert Drakes (West Indies) | Border vs Free State in East London, South Africa (2002) | Drakes was named in the line-up for the match but he didn't reach the stadium in time to bat as he was still on a plane to South Africa |
| AJ Harris (England) | Nottinghamshire vs Durham in Nottingham (2003) | AJ Harris was struggling with a groin injury, which made him walk too slow to the crease, leading to time out on appeal |
| Ryan Austin (West Indies) | Combined Campuses and Colleges vs Windward Islands in Kingstown (2013-14) | The No. 11 batter didn't show up at the crease in the stipulated time |
| Charles Kunje (Zimbabwe) | Matabeleland Tuskers vs Mountaineers in Bulawayo (2017-18) | Reason not listed |
| Angelo Mathews (Sri Lanka) | Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh in New Delhi (2023) | The batter didn't reach the crease on time due to a broken strap on his helmet and was timed out on appeal |
Shakib Al Hasan was widely criticised on social media for his decision as many, including former cricketers Gautam Gambhir and S Badrinath, believed that the Bangladesh captain showed poor sportsman spirit by remaining adamant on his decision despite the umpires approaching him.
Angelo Mathews reasoned with Shakib that he had to get his helmet fixed but Shakib was in no mood to change his decision.
