TNPL 2017: Washington Sundar hits ton as Patriots extend winning run

Washington Sundar celebrates his hundred

Tirunelvelli, Aug 2: Washington Sundar (107 off 61) scored the first century of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2017 as TuTi Patriots extended their winning streak to four, defeating Chepauk Super Gillies by 27 runs on Tuesday night (August 1).

Patriots were bolstered by the return of their captain Dinesh Karthik. Electing to bat first, Patriots were off to a flying start.

The most consistent pair of the tournament, Sundar and Kaushik Gandhi, opened the batting and scored their third opening century stand in four outings. The opening partnership of 107 runs came off just 73 balls.

R Alexander finally got Chepauk the much-needed breakthrough with a double strike in his third over. He first got rid of Kaushik Gandhi who holed out to long-on after miscuing a shot.

Karthik was undone, for a golden duck, by an in-swinger from Alexander that saw his stumps in disarray.

Sundar went about his business picking the gaps at will and hitting the big shots when the opportunity presented itself.

He brought up his century in the 19th over and got a standing ovation from his team as well as thunderous applause from the fans in the stadium.

A few lusty blows from Akash Sumra that included the 100th six of the tournament saw them add a few more valuable runs to the board. A challenging target of 179 was set.

Chepauk decided to open their batting KH Gopinath and Captain R Satish but they got off to the worst possible start.

A double strike in slinger A Davidson's over saw Satish being run-out in the second over after which Davidson cleaned up the stumps of the in-form opener Gopinath.

Anthony Dhas, who was promoted up the order, took the attack to the bowlers and gave the Chepauk fans something to cheer about as he scored a quick-fire 43 runs off 27 balls.

Whatever Sundar touched turned to gold as he also got the wicket of the dangerous Thalaivan Sargunam. Shortly Dhas's gutsy cameo came to an end as three fielders converged on the catch before Anand Subramanian took a comfortable diving catch.

Chepauk never got any real partnerships going with their highest being a stand of 60 between Das and Sargunam. All the Patriots bowlers were exceptional and they took some fine catches as well. TuTi were exceptional in the field taking sharp catches and hitting the stumps regularly.

Brief scores: Albert TuTi Patriots 178/4 in 20 overs (Washington Sundar 107, 61b, 11x4, 4x6, Kaushik Gandhi 35, 33b, 3x4, 1x6; R Alexander 2/22, Sai Kishore 1/23) beat Chepauk Super Gillies 151/8 in 20 overs (Anthony Dhas 43, 27b, 2x4, 4x6, S Karthik 39, 35b, 1x4, 2x6; Aushik Srinvas 2/30, Washington Sundar 1/15) by 27 runs.
