Srinagar, March 13: The CRPF jawans, who lost five of their colleagues, killed a man in a firing, while they were on way to donate blood to the injured.

Altaf Ahmad Wani, 30, sustained critical bullet injuries and succumbed while being taken to a hospital. He was killed here Wednesday when security forces opened fire on a stone-pelting mob that stopped the vehicle in which they were going to donate blood for one of their jawans injured in a shootout earlier in the day with terrorists at Bemina.

According to Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) inspector general V.S. Yadav a vehicle carrying CRPF personnel to donate blood for one of their colleagues critically injured in Wednesday's terrorist attack was caught in a stone-pelting mob. Yadav said that the jawans opened fire in self-defence. But the eyewitnesses claim that there was no stone pelting in the area. Some cricket playing kids threw some pebbles on the rushing CRPF vehicle as they had to remove their wickets on seeing the cavalcade.

Locals also refuted the CRPF version and said that Wani had been killed in unprovoked firing by the security forces. Altaf Wani was killed by CRPF near his residence in Saidapora Eidgah on Wednesday afternoon. He was a lone bread earner for his family of seven with four daughters. Altaf was hit by a bullet on back piercing his heart.

Altaf son of Abdul Ahad Wani was a shawl weaver by profession.Tension gripped Srinagar in the wake of Wani's killing.

Seven people - including five CRPF soldiers and two terrorists - were killed in a fierce gunfight in Bemina area of Srinagar earlier Wednesday.

Nine others - including six CRPF personnel and three civilians - were injured in the gun battle in the playfield of a police public school. The school was closed because of the separatist-called shutdown in the city.
The three injured civilians are reportedly out of danger. One of the injured CRPF trooper is battling for life in the city's super specialty Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences.
