“Trying To Smile And Enjoy”: Spencer Johnson Opens Up On Comeback With CSK After Injury Layoff
Australia left-arm fast bowler Spencer Johnson felt relieved after his IPL return for the Chennai Super Kings against Lucknow Super Giants on Friday. He bowled at more than 140kph in Lucknow, after a one-year break from top-flight cricket due to a back injury.
Johnson had not played any competitive cricket between IPL 2025 and IPL 2026. Against LSG, he hurried Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis with a sharp pace. He swung the ball back into Inglis in his first over, and finished with figures of 4-0-39-1.

Johnson said hitting speeds above 145kph is a long-term target. He spoke before CSK’s last home match of the season against Sunrisers Hyderabad. He felt his pace was “okay” on debut, and expects more rhythm and comfort as he plays more games.
Spencer Johnson Shares Changes In Workload Under CSK Staff
Before joining CSK in late April as a replacement for Nathan Ellis, Johnson worked in Australia with former fast bowler Ryan Harris. They made small tweaks to his action. The aim was to reduce stress on his back and prevent more injury problems.
Johnson said there is a strong focus on technique in Australia. He and Harris worked on running straighter and directing momentum better. Johnson said the actual changes were simple. The key was reducing extra strain on his back at the crease.
After arriving at CSK, he slowly increased bowling loads with coach Eric Simons. “I feel like the work that Eric has done in training he's got me up to speed,” Johnson said. He added that Stephen Fleming, Simons, and Ruturaj Gaikwad have shown strong support.
IPL 2026: Spencer Johnson On 'Enjoying' His Time At CSK Camp
Johnson said he wanted to enjoy cricket again after months out. “I'm not sure if you saw it on TV the other night, but I was trying to smile and enjoy the game... It's challenging, but I wouldn't be anywhere else in the world,” he said.
With Jamie Overton ruled out injured, Johnson’s pace brings variety to CSK’s attack. He accepts the pressure of the league. He called the IPL “the best tournament in the world” and CSK “probably the best franchise in the world”.
Johnson said playing for CSK is a privilege and a special experience. He wants to embrace the pressure that comes with that stage. For now, he is focused on staying fit, bowling faster, and helping CSK stay in the playoff race.
